The third night of Mayan Holidaze had the three headlining bands each play special sets. The Disco Biscuits went with their instrumental alter-ego Tractorbeam, Umphrey’s McGee played a setlist based on attendee voting (a ballot was sent out a couple of weeks ago), and STS9 played an acoustic “Axe The Cables” set. As we reported last week, STS9 bassist David Murphy has been diagnosed with cancer and the band’s February and March itinerary has been postponed. We hope to see Murph and STS9 back on the stage really soon.

Brendan Bayliss sang all of In The Kitchen in Spanish. GENIUS! At the end he mutters something, still in Spanish, about being sorry and drinking too many beers. It was announced on Tuesday that long-time UM sound caresser Kevin Browning would be leaving the touring crew of Umphrey’s McGee. He’s still got a handful of shows left to mix though. After drummer Allen Aucoin missed the entire New Year’s Eve run due to a very serious asthma related incident, the quartet was finally back to full-strength as they played a four-night run in Colorado. The audio selection, We Like To Party, is one of the newest songs in tDB’s repertoire – it has been played five times and was debuted in October of 2010. the Disco Biscuits play tomorrow night at Mayan Holidaze in Mexico.

Well this one is a fun story to tell. Way back in September of 2008 we ran a piece about Grace Potter covering Golden by My Morning Jacket. Fast forward to this past New Year’s Eve where Grace gives a nice thank you to all of the staff at the Higher Ground in Burlington, mentions that Caitlin (a member of the HG staff) had asked earlier if Grace could bustout this cover, which she does and says she thinks it’s only the second time it has been played. It would appear Caitlin’s request has gotten the song a bit into the rotation, as Grace played it again last Thursday. Grace Potter and The Nocturnals [tour dates] play tonight in Bozeman, MT.

I always enjoy taking a look at the setlists from Tim Palmieri’s solo shows, listening to them of course as well, but when it’s time to write Last Week’s Sauce every week and a solo Tim show is uploaded, I always think, “OK, what did he play this time?” This section looked particularly interesting to me, and the highlight is some great looping work and a seriously reverb-heavy solo in Men At Work’s Overkill. Where else can you get GodSpeed You Black Emperor! placed in between From Good Homes and Kung Fu? Nowhere – that’s where. This 18 minutes might be a little much for some of our readers, but I recommend listening to the whole thing, there’s a lot of volume control and it pays off. Fans of the band will want to check out the entire recording. The band is coming to the USA, their website is extremely difficult to navigate so check out the tourdates on Pollstar or something.

Jeff Tweedy has done an amazing job the past few years of balancing his Wilco touring duties with the occasional solo performance. Last week, he had his bandmates John Stirratt and Pat Sansone open up for him with their side-project The Autumn Defense. Not surprisingly, all parties involved were playing together by the end of the night for a great encore, some of which is featured here. The clear highlight being a fantastic rendition of John Lennon’s God in observance of the anniversary of his assassination. Be on the lookout for an epic lyric change in the Lennon cover. Jeff Tweedy [tour dates] next plays January 7th-8th, solo shows at The Boulder Theater in Colorado.

I’ll admit I haven’t listen to a whole lot of live Steve Miller Band, maybe there are a lot of 18-minute versions of Fly Like An Eagle, I just don’t know. But if anyone can help make them happen, it’s Mr. Warren Haynes on additional guitar – and that is of course, what happens here for the set closer of this set. Warren also joined the band earlier on for more standard renditions of Don’t Cha Know, Further On Up The Road and How Blue Can You Get.

Umphrey’s McGee – Ain’t No Sunshine

The list of covers that Umphrey’s McGee hands their potential guest musicians to choose from is massive at this point. John Bell of Widespread Panic joins a small list of guest vocalists who have blown the doors off this Bill Withers tune with UM in the past. In September of 2005, Jennifer Hartswick destroyed it at The Higher Ground in Vermont and just a couple months later Ugochi also performed it with the band at New York City’s Irving Plaza. Umphrey’s McGee [tour dates] next hits the stage for a 3-night New Year’s Eve Run at The Riviera Theater in Chicago.

And last, but certainly not least, we have the Warren Haynes Band. We here at Hidden Track love us some Gov’t Mule, but we are all very excited to see this band hit the road next year. Just exactly who will be in the touring band we don’t know yet, but for this gig he was backed by Ron Johnson on bass, Ivan Neville on keys and vocals, Ron Holloway on sax, Terrance Higgins on drums and Ruthie Foster on vocals. Gov’t Mule [tour dates] next plays December 28th at The Warner Theater in Washington DC before heading to New York City’s Beacon Theater for a two-night New Year’s Run.

Due to a death in the family, moe. had to reschedule their planned Halloween show titled the The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test. Well it happened last week and the band debuted five new songs, one of which is featured in the embedded audio and another one in the video below. moe. Was the Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds in the encore an early nod to John Lennon? Maybe. It was the last show of the run for PGroove, so maybe they just wanted to get it in while they could. Regardless, this encore pairing of the Beatles tune and Space Paranoids, an instrumental ditty in 5 that was released on the band’s recent Honey Cuts EP, packs some serious punch. As you may have heard, Phish drummer Jon Fishman joined Mike’s band to add a second kit to the majority of the show up in Portland, ME. This section of music, from mid first-set, features a first-time-played Little Feat tune, a bluegrass cover, Mike’s original The Void from his new album Moss as well as a take on Sugar Shack which appears on Phish’s 2009 album Joy. Note to Trey, THIS is how you play Sugar Shack. No future dates on the book for Mike’s solo band, but Phish returns to the stage December 27th at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
