Back in October, Keller Williams released an album simply titled Kids. As you may have guessed, it’s a children’s album and he has been playing some shows for the younger fans. This is a recording from one which includes songs from the album and an extended take on Because I Said So. Oh yes, there is still plenty of jam-looping even for the young’ins. Keller Williams [tour dates] plays tonight at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore, MD.

Since Sound Careser Kevin Browning left the road, Lighting Designer Jeff Waful has taken over the duties of live-tweeting from Umphrey’s McGee shows and he has been keeping us very entertained. Just have a look at this tweet relating to this segment of music included. Umphrey’s McGee [tour dates] plays tonight at Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO.

Well, this worked out well. As I was getting the audio together for this week’s post, I saw a show from The Decemberists pop up. On Tuesday we posted the Row Jimmy Cover Wars and The Decemberists are one of the four contestants. And wouldn’t you know it – they encored with it at this show in Scarbrough, ME. The Decemberists [tour dates] play tomorrow at Chicago’s Riviera Theater.

Some recent live video of Mariner’s Revenge Song:

Date & Venue: 2011-01-28 – The Dixie – Tuscaloosa, AL
Taper & Show Download: Taylor Caine

In this era of selling your live recordings directly via livedownloads.com or other sites, it is nice to see that Perpetual Groove still gives out SBD patches some of the time. This is a great sounding matrix put together by Taylor Caine. Perpetual Groove [tour dates] next plays February 8th at The Lyric Theatre in Oxford, MS.

For some contrast, Brock Butler performs his solo acoustic version of the same tune on Jam Cruise:

The Radiators are hitting the road for just a few more shows after touring for 33 years. This show actually marked the exact 33rd anniversary of the band. The Radiators [tour dates] play tonight at FitzGeralds in Berwyn, IL.

Gimme Some Lovin’ from the next night:

You can count on it every New Year’s Eve, Umphrey’s McGee will have a horn section and they debut a whole bunch of new covers. Then after the calendar year flips over, it’s always interesting to see which covers get to stick around in the rotation. So far UM has given encore performances of Roundabout by Yes and this cover of National Anthem by Radiohead. Umphrey’s McGee [tour dates] plays tonight at Buster’s in Lexington, KY.

The third night of Mayan Holidaze had the three headlining bands each play special sets. The Disco Biscuits went with their instrumental alter-ego Tractorbeam, Umphrey’s McGee played a setlist based on attendee voting (a ballot was sent out a couple of weeks ago), and STS9 played an acoustic “Axe The Cables” set. As we reported last week, STS9 bassist David Murphy has been diagnosed with cancer and the band’s February and March itinerary has been postponed.
Well this one is a fun story to tell. Way back in September of 2008 we ran a piece about Grace Potter covering Golden by My Morning Jacket. Fast forward to this past New Year’s Eve where Grace gives a nice thank you to all of the staff at the Higher Ground in Burlington, mentions that Caitlin (a member of the HG staff) had asked earlier if Grace could bustout this cover, which she does and says she thinks it’s only the second time it has been played. It would appear Caitlin’s request has gotten the song a bit into the rotation, as Grace played it again last Thursday. Grace Potter and The Nocturnals [tour dates] play tonight in Bozeman, MT.

I always enjoy taking a look at the setlists from Tim Palmieri’s solo shows, listening to them of course as well, but when it’s time to write Last Week’s Sauce every week and a solo Tim show is uploaded, I always think, “OK, what did he play this time?” This section looked particularly interesting to me, and the highlight is some great looping work and a seriously reverb-heavy solo in Men At Work’s Overkill. Tim Palmieri [tour dates] next plays live with his fusion ensemble Kung Fu January 28th at Jillian’s of Albany.

And finally, courtesy of nyctaper, we’ve got a great recording of Tina Weymouth’s band Tom Tom Club. The audio selection of these two Talking Heads staples were the 1-2 encore punch from this show last week at Irving Plaza.

Tom Tom Club – Take Me To The River, Pyscho Killer

And finally, courtesy of nyctaper, we’ve got a great recording of Tina Weymouth’s band Tom Tom Club. The audio selection of these two Talking Heads staples were the 1-2 encore punch from this show last week at Irving Plaza.

A cover of You Sexy Thing from the same show:

I’ll be honest, I was not expecting to see any tapes from Jam Cruise yet. But two different tapers have put up sets on the Live Music Archive and on bt.etree.org and for that, our collective Hidden Track hat is off to you. This two song combo ended the set for Lotus at Teatro Carlo Felice on the boat. Lotus [tour dates] next plays February 3rd & 4th at Mercury Lounge in NYC.

A little more than a year ago, in this same column, we supplied audio of the From Good Homes reunion. Well it looks like it more might be an annual tradition.

They made a DVD of last year’s reunion shows, a clip from that here:

Godspeed You Black Emperor! – East Hastings

Where else can you get GodSpeed You Black Emperor! placed in between From Good Homes and Kung Fu? Nowhere – that’s where. This 18 minutes might be a little much for some of our readers, but I recommend listening to the whole thing, there’s a lot of volume control and it pays off. Fans of the band will want to check out the entire recording. The band is coming to the USA, their website is extremely difficult to navigate so check out the tourdates on Pollstar or something.

In what I gather is a Kung Fu instrumental original, guitarist Tim Palmieri gets way into the Christmas spirit when it’s his turn to rip a solo. Kung Fu [tour dates] next plays December 27th at Tammany Hall in Worcester, hey wait – Phish is playing that night!

We try and supply video from the previous week, and we could of, but we really wanted to pass along this video of the band covering Van Halen that our friend Terry passed along:

In what I gather is a Kung Fu instrumental original, guitarist Tim Palmieri gets way into the Christmas spirit when it’s his turn to rip a solo. Kung Fu [tour dates] next plays December 27th at Tammany Hall in Worcester, hey wait – Phish is playing that night!

We try and supply video from the previous week, and we could of, but we really wanted to pass along this video of the band covering Van Halen that our friend Terry passed along:

As you can tell from the roar of the crowd, Christmas Song is still a crowd-favorite, especially this time of year. Oh admit it, you owned Live At Luther College and you know the words to this song. Well if you don’t, you should. Two bands in and I have no future tour dates to tell you about for either, oh no!

Jeff Tweedy has done an amazing job the past few years of balancing his Wilco touring duties with the occasional solo performance. Last week, he had his bandmates John Stirratt and Pat Sansone open up for him with their side-project The Autumn Defense. Not surprisingly, all parties involved were playing together by the end of the night for a great encore, some of which is featured here. The clear highlight being a fantastic rendition of John Lennon’s God in observance of the anniversary of his assassination. Be on the lookout for an epic lyric change in the Lennon cover. Jeff Tweedy [tour dates] next plays January 7th-8th, solo shows at The Boulder Theater in Colorado.

Tweedy & The Autumn Defense perform California Stars earlier in the encore:

I’ll admit I haven’t listen to a whole lot of live Steve Miller Band, maybe there are a lot of 18-minute versions of Fly Like An Eagle, I just don’t know. But if anyone can help make them happen, it’s Mr. Warren Haynes on additional guitar – and that is of course, what happens here for the set closer of this set. Warren also joined the band earlier on for more standard renditions of Don’t Cha Know, Further On Up The Road and How Blue Can You Get.

The list of covers that Umphrey’s McGee hands their potential guest musicians to choose from is massive at this point.
Was the Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds in the encore an early nod to John Lennon? Maybe. It was the last show of the run for PGroove, so maybe they just wanted to get it in while they could. Regardless, this encore pairing of the Beatles tune and Space Paranoids, an instrumental ditty in 5 that was released on the band’s recent Honey Cuts EP, packs some serious punch. Don’t worry Brock, we forgive you for botching the second verse, you sing a lot of covers. Perpetual Groove [tour dates] next plays December 30th at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta.

Keller [tour dates] is currently pulling double duty on the road playing his own solo shows as well as appearing with Yo Gabba Gabba. He plays three shows tonight, a 3pm/7pm for the kiddies and his own solo show at Harlow’s in Sacramento at 9pm. The audio selection features a 14+ minute rendition of Keller’s Best Feeling, originally released on his 1999 album Breathe, which was recorded with The String Cheese Incident.

Last week, Jeffrey Greenblatt filled in for me again and put together a great Cover Wars for Little Feat’s Willin’. As a nice follow-up to that feature, we’ve got a great recording of Paul Barrere (Little Feat member since 1972) and Fred Tackett (longtime Little Feat contributor and current member) performing a great selection of four songs here, leading off with Willin’. If you want to see Paul and Fred Acoustic [tour dates], I hope you live in Hawaii as those are the only two future dates currently on the books.

The video isn’t from last week, it’s from a couple months ago, but here is Paul and Fred playing Rocket In My Pocket:

In you’re asking me, which you’re not, Jimmy Herring is one of the top guitarists touring today. Jimmy is on tour with the supporting cast of Neal Fountain (bass), Jeff Sipe (drums) and Matt Slocum (keyboards). The audio selection first features an extended take on a track from Herring’s 2008 album Lifeboat and second is a slow-tempo cover of The Meters’ Funky Miracle.
