Backstage Video: Robert Plant Chats With Roger Daltrey – 2002

What is it about today that has led to incredibly cool backstage videos surfacing? On top of the footage of Buddy Miles and Phish we came across this morning, we’ve found a video of The Who’s Roger Daltrey shooting the shit with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin that was filmed in 2002.

Plant was aboard The Who’s North American Tour in the summer of 2002 as the opening act. This clip shows Robert conversing about all sorts of things with Daltrey and they get so into their conversation that they lose track of time. At the end, Plant’s tour manager alerts him that he’s running late and we see Plant quickly jet the room backstage and head to the stage. Check it out…

James Brown vs. Led Zeppelin – The Video Mash-up

Written by on 03.22.2013 | James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Videos

Visitors to Jimmy Page’s official website were in for a shock today when an embedded video featuring a James Brown vs. Led Zeppelin mashup auto-played upon their arrival. The mashup, which was put together by DJ Eric Ill and Fissunix, perfectly combines The Godfather of Soul’s Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine and Led Zep’s Whole Lotta Love both visually and aurally.

Page’s caption on his home page reads, “I was fortunate enough to see the dazzling James Brown a number of times. To hear him was one thing; to see him another thing; but to play with him would have been a dream come true. So this is as close as we can get.” Let’s check it out…

Cover Alert: Umphrey’s McGee – Hey Hey What Can I Do

HT faves Umphrey’s McGee continued a tour of the West Coast this weekend and as part of the run visited Oakland’s Fox Theater on Saturday night. UM guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss strapped on acoustics for a segment of Saturday’s first set for a segment that saw them sneak a second-ever performance of Hey Hey What Can I Do by Led Zeppelin in the middle of Nemo.

Umphrey’s first performed the Immigrant Song b-side in Atlanta on December 30, 2012. Jake and Brendan played acoustics on that version as well. YouTuber nowiknowyouryder has uploaded a clip of In The Kitchen from the Fox as well as Hey Hey What Can I Do. Let’s take a look…

The Bonhamizer: Add John Bonham’s Drums To Any Track

Written by on 02.19.2013 | Led Zeppelin, News, The Bonhamizer

Al Gore might have invented the internet decades ago, or so he says, yet we still find our minds being blown on a daily basis by some of the inventive ways users continue to harness the power of the web. Today’s example? The Bonhamizer – a way to add the powerful drumming of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham to any track you throw at it.

The web app was created this past weekend at Music Hack Day San Francisco 2013 by Paul Lamere. According to the site, it works by “cutting songs up into beats and tatums, and aligning the beats to John Bonham Drum patterns.” If you go to “Pick A Song,” you’ll see a list of Lamere’s favorite Bonhamizer tracks thus far such as The Beatles’ Norwegian Wood, Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, Intro by The xx and The Postal Service’s Such Great Heights.

Users can toggle between four different Bonham beats: ”hammer of the gods,” “Basic Bonham,” “double time shuffle” and “Bonham shuffle.” Some work better than others and we suggest keeping your browser open to The Bonhamizer as when we tried browsing in other tabs while listening, the track skipped. So head over to The Bonhamizer, throw a track or 12 at it and let us know which tunes work particularly well.

Return of Led Zeppelin in 2014? Robert Plant Tells 60 Minutes Australia He’s Free Next Year

Written by on 02.18.2013 | Led Zeppelin, News, Robert Plant

As the story goes, following Led Zeppelin’s well-received one-show reunion at London’s 02 Arena in 2007 Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were ready to bring the show on the road. Robert Plant demurred leading his former band mates to search out another lead singer, though they wisely never went through with the Plant-less Zeppelin. In a feature on Plant that aired last night on the Australian version of 60 Minutes, Plant tells reporter Tara Brown that not only should the blame for the lack of a Zeppelin tour not be laid at his feet, but that he has “nothing to do in 2014,” inferring that he’d be open to another reunion next year.

In explaining his side of the story of Brown, Plant said, “[Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones] are Capricorns. They keep shtum. They don’t say a word. They’re quite contained in their own worlds and they leave it to me.” When Brown says Plant is the bad guy for not reuniting the band, he turns it around on Page and JPJ, “You need to see the Capricorns because I’ve got nothing to do in 2014.” This is a much different response than the one Robert generally gave at a press gathering for the recently released Celebration Day, when he said “If we’re capable of doing something, in our own time, that will be what will happen” after chiding a reporter.

Now that Jimmy Page doesn’t have the “Robert isn’t interested” response to fall back on when asked about a possible Led Zeppelin reunion, we’re can’t wait to see how he responds to future queries.

You can watch the entire 16-minute feature on Plant here…

Profile: Led Zeppelin on CBS Sunday Morning

Written by on 12.17.2012 | Led Zeppelin, Videos

CBS’s Sunday Morning has profiled many rockers over the years and has gained a reputation for smartly-produced compelling features thanks in part to their pieces on Levon Helm, Wilco and Tom Petty. Yesterday, the program aired a fantastic profile of Led Zeppelin that contains interviews with Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, both separately and together.

Segment host Anthony Mason digs deep into the band’s history and brings us up to their 2007 reunion concert that was the focus of the recently released Celebration Day. The band reacts as expected to the obligatory “when will you play again question?” but we don’t blame Mason for trying. There’s also amazing footage of a 12-year-old Jimmy Page appearing on British TV and a funny segment where fans approach Robert Plant on the street. If you missed it yesterday, watch this enthralling piece…

Hidden Flick: Hidden History – Led Zeppelin & Rolling Stones

History comes when the mind is awake, and, at this time of the year, it is often difficult to just sit down and think about what has happened, what has almost transpired, and what has not. Often, one gets a fleeting glimpse of what may or may not be true, but it appears more like a dream, rather than some form of historical fact. And, hey, life can appear more active in that sense, anyway. One should be able to breeze through the pages of some spiritual, or cultural, or metaphysical history book, and re-write the pages, insert a new belief, a new idea, a new concept for the future, re-conceiving events to place them into a proper modern context.

Ahhh…such a dangerous game, no?

Which is all a really pompous way to introduce the current modus operandi at hand as we dig into a pair of films for this edition of Hidden Flick, and enter the post-death, maybe even the post-zombie apocalypse version of this little column that somehow could. Perhaps, this is the Undead Season—the one where anything is possible, and nothing, or no one, ever dies. Either that, or we continue to look at old portraits in a new frame—consistently checking to see “did that really happen, or is my third eye, my tricky little mind’s eye, playing games with me/us/it?”

History is a living breathing beast, and, so, we use that pulsating thought to explore two documents released this year, which focus a new light on some rather old subjects, or a fresh perspective on some off-the-radar, hidden thought process. Indeed, this edition will feature the Rolling Stones’ Charlie Is My Darling and Led Zeppelin’s Celebration Day.

Full Show Friday: Led Zeppelin @ Knebworth 1979

Written by on 10.12.2012 | Full Show Friday, Led Zeppelin, Videos

Back before Coachella decided to expand to two weekends featuring the same bands earlier this year, the Knebworth Festival took place over two Saturdays in August 1979 boasting a lineup with headliners Led Zeppelin backed by five bands that played both nights and one slot which was filled by a different act at the two events (Fairport Convention the first Saturday and The New Barbarians on the second one). According to Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant over 400,000 music fans attended Knebworth ’79, among the biggest crowds ever for the legendary rockers. It wound up being LZ’s last performances in the U.K. until the “reunion show” in 2007.

There’s no doubt these weren’t the best Led Zeppelin performances of all-time, as the band had only played a pair of warmup shows since a 1977 North American Tour, but the second show certainly had plenty of standout moments. Zep tackled most of the best songs in their repertoire and debuted a pair of tunes the soon-to-be-released In Through The Out Door LP. Both shows were recorded professionally, though it took until the release of the Led Zeppelin DVD in 2003 for any of the footage to be officially released. However the full shows make the rounds in bootleg circles, and we came across the entire second show from August 11, 1979. Kick off your weekend with this…

Audio: Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones Thank You Organ Solo

Written by on 10.01.2012 | Audio, Led Zeppelin

While Robert Plant, John Bonham and Jimmy Page get most of the attention when it comes to Led Zeppelin, we consider ourselves John Paul Jones aficionados around these parts. Not only is he an incredible bass player, but he’s got ridiculous skills on a number of other instruments including organ.

Thanks to redditor El_Motor we came across audio of an outstanding, improvised solo that led into Thank You at the Showgrounds in Sydney, Australia on February 27th, 1972…

And might as well listen to the Thank You that followed…

Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day To Hit Theaters on Oct. 17

Written by on 09.12.2012 | Led Zeppelin, News

We’re down to “1″ on Led Zeppelin’s much-buzzed about Facebook countdown that started at “5″ on Saturday leading us to believe that the announcement of the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the group’s 2007 reunion show will take place within 24 hours. That hasn’t stopped those around the music industry and LZ fans from trying to scoop the band.

Yesterday, Britain’s The Sun newspaper reported that the video release will take place on November 22nd. A source for the paper says, “Jimmy [Page] has been in the studio making sure everything is perfect. The band want it to remain true to their exceptionally high standards.” Today, intrepid fans came across a listing for a one-night-only broadcast of “Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day,” with a description of the 2007 reunion show, that will hit theaters on October 17th. We think at this point it’s fait accompli that tomorrow’s announcement will be about the release of the reunion show. Hopefully they’ll share video and/or audio of a full song to whet our appetite.

Written by on 09.11.2012 | Led Zeppelin, News, Videos

The official Led Zeppelin Facebook page has come alive in recent days with a countdown that started at five on Saturday and stands at two as of today. According to respected metal site Blabbermouth, the countdown will end with the announcement of double-CD/double-DVD release of the group’s 2007 reunion show at 02 Arena in London.

The reunion show took place nearly five years ago, on December 10, 2007, as a tribute to late record industry pioneer Ahmet Ertegün and featured Jason Bonham filling his father John’s huge shoes behind the drum kit. While we wait for the official announcement and release, let’s take a look at the best copy of that concert currently on YouTube. A Led Zep fan who goes by meltingigloo edited all the fan-shot and official video, slapped on the best audience recording to surface as a soundtrack and shared it all for our viewing and listening pleasure…

Set: Good Times Bad Times, Ramble On, Black Dog, In My Time Of Dying, For Your Life, Trampled Underfoot, Nobody’s Fault But Mine, No Quarter, Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You, Dazed and Confused, Stairway To Heaven, The Song Remains The Same, Misty Mountain Hop, Kashmir

Encore: Whole Lotta Love, Rock and Roll

We’ll be sure to let you know when the official announcement comes down.
