Longtime HT faves The McLovins will perform a free, all-ages show at Brooklyn Bowl this Sunday, November 21 at 2PM. Phish lyricist Tom Marshall and former Spin Doctors guitarist Anthony Krizan will sit in with the trio during the show, which will also be webcast for those who can’t make it out to the Bowl. Here’s a clip showing the making of Cohesive – a single the boys created with the help of Marshall and Krizan…

Review: McLovins and 7 Walkers @ Rev Hall

Written by on 06.03.2010 | 7 Walkers, McLovins

As we mentioned, Revolution Hall in Troy hosted its last jam show last week and writer/photographer Andy Hill was there to document the evening…

This was it, the last Revolution Hall show – the last real show anyway – before the comfortable room was to close as a live music venue, reportedly, to become a banquet hall. So, as one might expect the mood was one of lament and nostalgia as people slowly filed in and exclaimed their thanks to the staff that had helped to make Rev. Hall such a great place over the years. Conversations of fun times and great shows were overheard at every turn. Although inevitably those conversations would quickly devolve into the frustration of the loss of a stomping ground that had become a home away from home for so many of us.

When the McLovins took the stage though, all conversation halted and jaws quickly hit the floor. These kids, and I hesitate to call them kids as their musical maturity is astounding, played an amazing set that surprised even those of us that have seen them a couple of times. It is clear that they are no novelty act and will be around for a long time to come. Their music is as forward thinking as it is virtuosic. Even Malcolm “Papa Mali” Welbourne, of the headlining act 7 Walkers, gave them props in saying that he couldn’t get the rest of his band (Matt Hubbard, Bill Kreutzmann, and George Porter Jr.) to come onstage for their set as they “were afraid to follow the McLovins.” That is a compliment that the McLovins will not soon forget.

No one seemed to have any idea what to expect from the unique mix of players that 7 Walkers consists of, we just expected it to be good. The two-set show had set lists that were mainly comprised of Grateful Dead favorites. Although there was a couple of traditional blues tunes and couple of new songs whose lyrics were written by Robert Hunter thrown into the mix. From the looks of the crowd, they did not disappoint. Rev. Hall’s dance floor was packed one last time and it seemed that all of the prior lamenting had been replaced with jubilation until 7 Walkers feted the end of Revolution Hall’s concert days appropriately in their second encore with an abbreviated version of And We Bid You Goodnight.

Video: McLovins – Good Catch Preview

Written by on 05.13.2010 | McLovins, Videos

The prolific McLovins are back with their sophomore effort Good Catch at the end of May. We had a chance to check out the album and it shows some maturity without losing the youthful exuberance that brought them to our attention. Over the past few months we’ve debuted a number of live versions of the tunes on Good Catch including 20 in a 35 and Virtual Circle.

You can preview the LP thanks to this eight-minute clip the band made…

HT Interview: A Chat With The McLovins

Written by on 03.10.2010 | Editor's Choice, Interviews, McLovins

We’re honored to welcome journalist Bob Doda to Team HT. Today, Bob makes his Hidden Track debut with an extensive profile on one of our favorite bands – The McLovins…

On a sunny afternoon in Brooklyn, all three members of The McLovins stand with their backs to a retro-style bowling alley and watch a video of a seal & penguin fight to the death, in some sort of psychedelic nature video.

[All photos courtesy of Carol Huffman]

“That seal kicked that penguin’s ass,” says Jake Huffman, 16, the band’s lead singer and drummer. Obviously, this isn’t your average bowling alley.

The Brooklyn Bowl is half bowling alley, fitted with leather couches and half staging area complete with flashing lights and dance floor. On this particular Sunday, the Bowling Alley is hosting their first Bar Mitzvah. Upon first glance, it would appear that Jake, Jason Ott (bass) and Jeff Howard (guitar) would be there to bowl a few games and down a few cold coca-cola classics, not melt one face at a time with catchy riffs and jams that could only be classified as organized chaos.

Entering their second year as “the band that killed YEM on YouTube,” The McLovins are poised to stay busy in 2010. They will be opening for legendary jam rockers, Max Creek, who are on the verge of their 40th anniversary, in May. They are also on the Snoe.Down bill scheduled for a lunchtime set in Killington, Vermont, and the StrangeCreek Festival in Greenfield, Massachusetts Memorial Day Weekend. Another huge milestone for The McLovins is their own show at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut on May 7th. Most recently, they played a gig at the celebrated club, Nectar’s, in Burlington, when a local piano player walked through the door.

Sunday: Free McLovins @ Brooklyn Bowl

Written by on 03.05.2010 | Brooklyn Bowl, McLovins

This Sunday at 3PM, HT Faves The McLovins take the stage at Brooklyn Bowl for a free show. Does it get much better than McLovins + Brooklyn Bowl + Free, no, for me it does not. Since that fateful November evening when 15-year-old drummer Jake Huffman uploaded a video of the young trio slaying Phish’s You Enjoy Myself, the group’s original songs, stage presence and improvisational prowess  has grown by leaps and bounds.

It isn’t often they make it down to New York City and rarely do they play All Ages Shows, so this should be a terrific opportunity to see why we keep fluffing their music. Can’t make it out but still want to see The McLovins play? You’re in luck as they will be webcasting a show tomorrow night at 7PM straight from New Vizion.  We hope to see you on Sunday afternoon.

Hors d’Oeuvres: Phishy iPhone Apps

We’ve got two new Phish-related iPhone apps to tell you about and they both look pretty damn cool. First up is Phanatic which offers setlists and statistics from every concert Phish has played over the past 26 years and will be updated on the fly with future setlists as the shows happen. Also available is the iDIDN’TKNOW pack featuring five fun games about the band including Professor Mulchahey’s Phinal Exam, Phanagrams and Fuzzy Math.

Both apps are currently available through the iTunes store with a portion of sales from each going to The Mockingbird Foundation.

There’s plenty of links to share, so let’s get down to business…

Finally, The McLovins have just released a new EP entitled Virtual Circle that features the title track and Hell Yeah, both of which will be on the boys’ sophomore release come next summer. You can download both tracks for a mere $1.98 through the trio’s website.

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: The McLovins – Hell Yeah

Written by on 12.10.2009 | McLovins, Pullin' Tubes

2009 couldn’t have worked out much better for our friends The McLovins. Not only did they play their first gigs in New York City and Boston, they also scored a spot at Gathering of the Vibes and released their first album.

The year isn’t over yet and the Connecticut-based trio has got at least one more trick up their proverbial sleeves. Jake, Jason and Jeff unveiled a “brand raging new” (their term) original called Hell Yeah last Friday night at Troy’s Revolution Hall where they were opening for Max Creek. Hell Yeah veers more dark-prog than some of the boys’ other originals. Check it out…

The McLovins have just posted yet another new song to YouTube. This fun rocker – named 20 in a 35 – features Jake Huffman relentlessly pounding the skins, Jason Ott holding it down with some meaty bass lines and Jeff Howard unleashing some monstrous riffs throughout his relentless four-minute guitar solo. These three young talented musicians never fail to impress.

Artist & Title: Gene Ween – Birthday Boy, Baby Bitch
Date & Venue: 2009-05-09 – The Walnut Room, Denver CO
Taper & Show Download: Eric Foelske

Last week, I let you in on my goal of using unique artists for as long as I can with this piece. Well, I’m already stretching things a little bit, but I think it’s OK. I have previously used the Gene Ween Band, but this is Gener solo – TOTALLY different. Anyway, I really like this 1-2 combo of songs as they are both well constructed tunes and have similar subject matter. There is a line in Baby Bitch, “Wrote Birthday Boy for you babe”. He’s got two more solo gigs on the books in June.
