Boot Camp: Donald Fagen Band ’06 Soundboard

During a hiatus from Steely Dan in 2006, Donald Fagen embarked on a theater tour to support his third solo album, Morph The Cat. Fagen’s extremely talented band featured keyboardist Jeff Young, Wayne Krantz and Jon Herington on guitars, trumpet wiz Michael Leonhart, drummer Keith Carlock, bassist Freddie Washington, Walt Weiskopf on sax with Carolyn Leonhart and Cindy Mizelle on vocals. On the heels of the flood of outrageous Steely Dan bootlegs that surfaced last month comes a soundboard from that memorable tour circulated by the same guy (Buttmanos on Trader’s Den).

When Fagen and his band pulled into NYC’s Beacon Theater on March 7th, 2006 they treated the audience to a mix of Steely Dan classics such as Home At Last, Pretzel Logic and FM with gems from his solo catalog. He also turned the show over to Canadian singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright (daughter of Loudon and sister of Rufus) for her own Year Of The Dragon. The sound on this recording is tremendous and any Steely Dan fan would be wise to add it to their collection. For MP3 files of Disc One (Disc Two coming tomorrow) head over to the Talkin’ About My Revolutions. Head to The Trader’s Den (registration required) for the FLACs.

We’ve uploaded FM from this show to SoundCloud for your streaming pleasure…

Boot Camp: The Last Time Mick Taylor Sat In With The Stones

Last night The Rolling Stones kicked off a celebration of their 50th Anniversary at the 02 Arena in London, where they filled the 23-song performance with rarities and guest spots. One of those guests was former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor who joined the band in 1969 before resigning in 1974. Yet yesterday wasn’t the first time Taylor performed with his old mates since he quit as he sat in for a large part of the Stones’ December 14, 1981 show at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

Taylor was in Kansas City for a gig with Alvin Lee leading to his guest spot at the Kemper. Ronnie Wood explained in his autobiography, “On the ’81 tour in Kansas City, we heard that Mick Taylor was in town we invited him up on stage for a few numbers. Perhaps the reunion over excited him. He seemed to refuse to realize how much the band had changed since his departure. He shocked us with how loud he was blasting it. Bulldozing through parts of songs that should have been subtle, ignoring the breaks and taking uninvited solos. And the volume! I thought me and Keith play loud, but he was easily three times louder than us. I was standing next to him, passing along messages from Keith who would say, ‘Tell that @#$%& to turn it down!’ I was a little more diplomatic: ‘Um, Mick, the song is finished’ or ‘It’s in E, not F.’ Afterwards, Keith told me, ‘It’s a good thing you were standing in between us or I’d have flattened him.’ But he’s a lovely man and it was great to see him.”

Rolling Stones @ Kemper Arena – December 14th, 1981

Set: Under My Thumb/When The Whip Comes Down/Let’s Spend The Night Together/Shattered/Neighbours/Black Limousine/Just My Imagination/ Twenty Flight Rock/Going To A Go Go/Let Me Go/Time Is On My Side/ Beast Of Burden/Waiting On A Friend/Let It Bleed/You Can’t Always Get What You Want/Band introduction/Little T & A/Tumbling Dice/She’s So Cold/Hang Fire/Miss You/Honky Tonk Women/Brown Sugar/Start Me Up/ Jumping Jack Flash/Satisfaction

Note: With special guest Mick Taylor on guitar. Probably from Black Limousine
up to You Can’t Always Get What You Want and also on Satisfaction

[Info via Complete Works of The Rolling Stones]

Despite what Wood said, the soundboard recording that circulates tells a different story. When you can make out Taylor’s guitar licks, he adds to the songs, he doesn’t take away from them. Mick T. stayed on stage during a number of tunes from after his tenure in the group and he must’ve turned his volume down as you can’t hear his distinctive tone on those songs. Taylor especially shines on You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Head over to Soundaboard to download the liberated soundboard bootleg “Mick Taylor, We Love You and We’ll Always Do” in either FLAC or MP3 format.

Boot Camp: Four Amazing Steely Dan Soundboards Unearthed

Written by on 11.13.2012 | MP3 Boot Camp, Steely Dan

Now that Steely Dan has been touring off and on for the past 20 years, it’s easy to forget that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker famously withdrew the band from the road in 1975 to focus on writing and recording. After reforming in 1993 the pair, and a variety of extremely talented backing bands, have toured the world a number of times; generally with a different setlist for each excursion.

Steely Dan soundboards have been few-and-far between, so we were thrilled to see a user named “buttmanos” on The Trader’s Den website [registration required] share a batch of crystal-clear recordings from throughout the “reunion years.” There’s four soundboards of note that all Danfans need to add to their collections. We’ve compiled links for them below…

“Dallas 1994 First Night” – September 2nd, 1994

Buttmanos’ Notes: Here is a fantastic soundboard recording from the 94 tour. The quality exceeds that of Irvine ’94 as that show is lacking in the bottom-end department. This one more than makes up for it! Indeed, we have a great stereo spread and a crystalline, transparent capture — this may be the best sounding Steely Dan ROIO ever. It is certainly in the upper echelon. Plus, we have a great backing band and an even better setlist.

“The Second Theater We’ve Blown up this Year” – June 25th, 2000

Boot Camp: Free Classic moe. Show For Larry

Written by on 11.01.2012 | moe., MP3 Boot Camp

One of the many bands that had a special bond with NYC club Wetlands Preserve was moe. Between 1994 and 1995 the Upstate New York-based quartet (at that time) played a whopping 16 times and recorded a live album, Loaf., at the legendary venue. Wetlands founder Larry Bloch took a shine to Al, Rob, Chuck and whichever drummer was in the band at the time and moe. never forgot it. In memory of Bloch, who passed away on Sunday, moe. is sharing one their best Wetlands performances as a free download.

[moe. at the Wetlands Photo via moe.'s Facebook Page]

Drummer Mike Strazza was only in the band for a few months, but his highly technical style fit moe. like a glove. Strazza’s skills are on full display during the September 23rd, 1995 moe. show that the band has offered up for free. Fluid versions of Rebubula, Timmy Tucker and Brent Black are a few of the many highlights as well as covers of Pink Floyd’s Interstellar Overdrive and Take The Skinheads Bowling by Camper Van Beethoven. There’s also a sit-in from Digjeridoo Dave on Yodelittle. Head to LiveDownloads.com to download the full MP3 set for free.

Boot Camp: Isle of Wight Festival 2012 Highlights

Written by on 06.26.2012 | MP3 Boot Camp

This past weekend approximately 55,000 music fans descended upon England’s Isle of Wight for the famed Isle of Wight Festival. Rain storms made getting to and around the island a bitch, but that didn’t stop dozens of veteran bands and a handful of newer ones from taking the festival’s three stages. Many performances from Isle of Wight ’12 were broadcast in Britain on digital FM radio, which means killer bootlegs for us. Here’s three of note: We’ve come across this compilation featuring tracks from Madness, Elbow, Primal Scream, Noah and the Whale, Lana Del Rey, Big Country, James Walsh, Feeder, Joan Armatrading, Band of Skulls and The Vaccines that’s well worth the download. You can also download the five songs from Bruce Springsteen’s headlining set, including his sensational cover of Twist and Shout, that were broadcast. Finally, a large portion of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ set is making the rounds.

Boot Camp: Five Live Beastie Boys Recordings

Written by on 05.07.2012 | MP3 Boot Camp

We’re still reeling from the loss of Adam “MCA” Yauch, a founding member of the Beastie Boys who passed away on Friday after a long battle with cancer. While there’s been no official announcement, we can’t see Mike D and Ad-Rock touring as the Beastie Boys in the future, but stranger things have happened.  For this installment of Boot Camp, we’re going to highlight five must-have Beastie Boys bootlegs from throughout their career that every fan should have. None of them are hosted here, but we’ll point you in the right direction.

02/07/1987 @ Hollywood Palladium AUD [MP3 via BeastieMixes]

One of the only recordings to circulate from the License To Ill days, this boot features the BBoys performing with Run D.M.C. and marks the Beasties first headlining gig in the Los Angeles area. While it’s one of only two audience recording on our list, it’s worth checking out.

05/22/1992 @ Randy’s Rodeo SBD [Stream / MP3 via BeastieMixes]

A soundboard from the Check Your Head days, this Randy’s Rodeo recording has been making the rounds since the days after the show. There’s a nice mix of the trio on their instruments (along with backing musicians) as well as MCing. Tracks from License To Ill, Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head make up the majority of this boot.

06/15/1996 @ Golden Gate Park SBD [Stream / MP3 via BeastieMixes]

The Beastie Boys were one of the headliners at the Tibetan Freedom Concerts at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on June 15 and 16, 1996. Here we have a soundboard recording of the BBoys’ set from the 15th which was seen by over 100,000 people.  Just four years after the last boot on our list, this set features a completely different setlist that focuses on Ill Communication material.

08/20/1998 @ Philadelphia Spectrum SBD [MP3 (click "slow download" for free d/l) / Stream]

This soundboard from 1998, which contains a fantastic mix of tracks from the Beastie Boys’ first four albums, came out of the woodwork recently. Oddly, some of the tracks are broken up into two parts on the circulating copy.

06/12/2009 @ Bonnaroo AUD [MP3 Download Through BeastieMixes / FLAC / Stream]

The Beastie Boys’ last live show took place at Bonnaroo in 2009, where a few tapers were on hand to capture this historic performance. Surprisingly, the setlist isn’t all that different from the show above, which took place 11 years earlier.

Head over to BeastieMixes for a full repository of Beastie Boys live recordings.

MP3 Boot Camp: Phil and Friends w/ Branford Marsalis

Written by on 11.15.2011 | MP3 Boot Camp

The first shows billed as Phil Lesh and Friends took place in the Bay Area during the Spring of 1998. One of these shows, a 4/20 gig at the Warfield, featured a ridiculous lineup of Lesh, Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby, John Molo, Stan Franks and Branford Marsalis. An audience recording of this performance has just surfaced on the Live Music Archive and is well worth hearing for the banter between Phil, Bobby and Bruce alone.

Boot Camp: 33 Pearl Jam SBDs From 2005

Written by on 09.01.2011 | MP3 Boot Camp, Pearl Jam

It’s easy to forget that Pearl Jam was ahead of their time with the creation of the group’s Official Bootleg series. Within months of completing the Binaural Tour in 2000, the Seattle rockers made 72 complete shows available for purchase on CD in three waves. As recently as 2010 Pearl Jam made most shows available for digital download. Once the band stops selling old bootlegs on their website, the rules for distribution become lax. You can download 33 Pearl Jam Official Bootlegs from 2005 in 192kbps MP3 format through The Ultimate Bootleg Experience.

Here’s links to six other boots worth adding to your music collection…

In other Pearl Jam news, the band will share gems from their vault each day for the next 20 days as a countdown to the release of the Pearl Jam Twenty soundtrack. Today’s clip features a performance of Better Man from Madison Square Garden on May 21, 2010…
