Erykah Badu And My Morning Jacket Call Tyrone

Written by Scott Bernstein on 08.24.2008 | My Morning Jacket

Last night in Dallas, My Morning Jacket welcomed hometown hero Erykah Badu to the stage for a rousing version of Badu’s Tyrone. MMJ busted out their cover of the ultimate kiss-off song earlier this year at Bonnaroo. Erykah recently hailed MMJ’s “bluesy/soulful” version of Tyrone as better than the original.

Written by Scott Bernstein on 08.22.2008 | My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket’s awe-inspiring performance at Radio City Music Hall in June was clearly one of the best concerts we’ve seen so far this year. Now we’ll get a chance to hear a crystal-clear recording of the gig thanks to Chicago’s WXRT. XRT, one of the best radio stations in the country, will air My Morning Jacket’s performance from RCMH in its entirety at 8PM on Wednesday, August 27.

Friday’s Leftovers: Jim James On His Mustache

The American Mustache Institute fights discrimination against mustached Americans by promoting the growth, care, and culture of the mustache. Each month the organization interviews a prominent member of the Mustache Tribe. My Morning Jacket’s Jim James recently sat down with the AMI to discuss his love of facial hair, showering with guitars and what he thinks about Philly’s Dr. Dog.

Whether you love the ’stache or not, here are some links:

Lollapalooza kicks off in just a few short hours at Chicago’s Grant Park. Both Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot can’t resist taking multiple shots at the festival’s promoters within their previews of Lollapalooza’s can’t miss performances.

The B List: Top 6 Of The First 6

I’ve been writing full time here for about five months or so, and figured it was about high time that I took a crack at offering up a B List. Last week the HT Staff gathered Around The BBQ to gab about some of our favorite music of the year, so far. To continue on that theme I thought I’d give you a more focused list of my favorite albums of ‘08 with my Top 6 Of The First 6.

Taking a quick glance at my iTunes I was a bit underwhelmed by the majority of the music that has been injected onto my iPod, but here’s the best of what I’ve heard…

6. Girl Talk - Feed The Animals

When I tell my friends how much I’ve been loving this album they seem to scratch their heads a bit. Not because this isn’t a killer party album, it’s just because I’m not the type to usually like killer party albums. But what’s not to like here? Greg Gillis has essentially taken the last 40 plus years of pop music and smushed it into a powered packed hour of samples and beats. Within one song he offers up hooks from Procol Harum, Fergie, The Band and 50 Cent - and that’s just scratching the surface. This is the feel good album of the summer and quite possibly the year. The B List: 10 Favorite Concerts of ‘08…So Far

It hardly seems like six months have passed since the beginning of the year, but here we are on June 26. While I’ve failed miserably at fulfilling all of my resolutions I did see a ton of incredible shows. Now I get to rate them, as this week’s B List looks at my ten favorite concerts of the first half of ‘08.

What’s the criteria for this list? Well, obviously I had to be there to catch the show, so I can’t give MMJ @ Bonnaroo “show of the year” honors even though the tapes seem to indicate they deserve it. All I can go by is my gut and how wide of a smile each of these performances induced. Here’s what I’ve got…

10. Jennifer Hartswick - The Blue Note - May 24

I’ve had the pleasure of catching J-Ha at the Blue Note on three separate occasions, but the performance she gave at the legendary jazz club in May was the cat’s pajamas. I brought my cousin to the show, and it was incredible to see how in awe she was of Jen’s voice, trumpet playing and the way Jen took control of the audience. Let’s hope there are more Jennifer Hartswick gigs in store for us New Yorkers. READ ON for Scotty’s top nine shows of the first half of ‘08…

MMJ @ RCMH: Downloads and YouTubes

Written by Scott Bernstein on 06.23.2008 | My Morning Jacket

Last weekend, My Morning Jacket impressed the hell out of the Bonnaroo crowd by bringing out special guests and busting out fun covers over the course of their two set show. On Friday night at Radio City Music Hall the Louisville-based band showed that they could still rock the fuck out of an audience without relying on those gimmicks. My Morning Jacket pulled off a nicely-paced 160 minute set chock full of the finest songs in their catalog, and I loved nearly every minute of it.

From the moment Jim James took the stage you could sense he fully appreciated his band’s achievement in selling out one of the most famous venues in the world. Remember those cheap old windup toys? It seemed like someone spent an hour winding Jim James up and let him loose. Towards the middle of the show I looked down for a minute and the next thing I knew everyone in the crowd was going ape shit. A friend of mine pointed in the direction of the runway that connects the stage and the balconies, where James was running up and down the aisle ways pausing only to rip memorable solos. What a total Rock God.

Here’s the setlist, including links to YouTubes where available…

Set: Evil Urges, Off The Record, Gideon, I’m Amazed, Highly Suspicious, What a Wonderful Man, Touch Me Part 1, Sec Walkin, Golden, Thank You Too, The Way That He Sings, Two Halves, Phone Went West, Aluminum Park, Steam Engine -> Smokin From Shootin -> Touch Me Part 2, Bermuda Highway@, Librarian, Wordless Chorus, It Beats 4 U, Dondante, The Bear, Lay Low, Run Thru, Anytime, One Big Holiday

I can’t even begin to describe all of the highlights from Friday night’s show, but one moment sticks out from the rest. When MMJ launched into the show-closing One Big Holiday the crowd went absolutely berserk. Men and women, young and old, started jumping up and down singing the lyrics at the top of their lungs. I haven’t seen a band illicit that reaction from their fans since I went to top-40 concerts in middle school. I had a hard time focusing on the band, as I was too busy watching everyone in the venue enjoy themselves to the fullest.

Friday Mix Tape: MMJ Double Dip

As we prepare for My Morning Jacket to own our collective faces at Radio City Music Hall this evening, let’s start the day with a mix of live tunes from the gents. The first mix is full of originals, while the second mix features a varied assortment of our favorite MMJ covers. Man, it’s gonna be tough to get any work done today.

I couldn’t resist picking my favorite MMJ song, Anytime, to start the mix strong. Next, we mellow things out with Golden, which gives way to the orgasmic tones of Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2. I’d really like to see Cobra tonight, so I threw that into the compliation before closing the mix with mindblowing versions of What A Wonderful Man and Off The Record.

BG: Wouldn’t You Like To Be A Pepper Too?

It’s been a bit of a hectic week for me as the real job has been getting in the way. I’ve been so out of touch that Google Reader is telling me I have over a 1,000 stories that I still need to get to. Luckily, I’ve got a few choice links to share with you this beautiful afternoon. Let’s take a look at what’s goin’ on…

Finally, is everyone in the country about to get a free can of Dr. Pepper? Yesterday, news surfaced about a newly leaked version of the perpetually delayed GnR album Chinese Democracy. Rolling Stone-who heard all nine tracks, including three new ones-was quite impressed with they heard. Bring it on!
