Interlocken Festival: Neil Young, Furthur, Black Crowes

The first lineup announcement from the Interlocken Festival has just been made by our friends at Relix. Put together by H.O.R.D.E. co-founder Dave Frey and Relix publisher Pete Shapiro, the event will take place from September 5 – 8 at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia. Today, we’ve found out that Furthur, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Black Crowes and String Cheese Incident will be among the bands performing at the first of what we hope will be many Interlocken’s. In addition, country-rocker Zac Brown will team up with The String Cheese Incident at the fest.

We’re already digging on the lineup which makes us think of what the top of a 2013 Bonnaroo lineup would look like if organizers kept the focus on jam acts. According to the Interlocken website, “Many of the artists will be performing at Interlocken over multiple days, and will be featured in unique and exciting artist pairings – with additional artists to be announced soon.” With guys like Shapiro and Frey in charge, we know we’re in good hands and can’t wait to see the rest of the lineup and these “exciting artist pairings.”

“Most festivals these days are trying to be everything to everyone — very eclectic with an emphasis on a large number of artists in various genres,” says Shapiro in a statement to Relix. “With Interlocken, we want to break away from that mold and create something more identifiable and distinct.”

Early-bird tickets go on sale May 23rd at 10AM ET.

Cover Alert: Soulive w/ Marco Benevento, David Hidalgo & London Souls – Ohio > Down By The River (Neil Young)

Soulive’s annual Bowlive Run at Brooklyn Bowl continued last night in Williamsburg. Special guests included keyboardist Marco Benevento, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo, The Shady Horns and opening act The London Souls. For the encore, Soulive welcomed their guests up, with the exception of the horns, for a 20-plus-minute tribute to Neil Young.

Soulive, Benevento, Hidalgo and The London Souls kicked off the encore with the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young protest song Ohio sung by Tash Neal. The CSNY cover morphed into Neil Young’s Down By The River on which Tash shared vocals with Alan Evans. Once Tash, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno and Hidalgo were finished taking turns soloing, the Los Lobos guitarist stepped to the mic to deliver a verse of Buffalo Springfield’s For What It’s Worth.

Our pal MKDevo captured the entire encore for our viewing pleasure…

Bowlive IV continues tonight with special guests Bill Evans and John Medeski.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse Play Marathon Show in Melbourne Featuring Three Tour Debuts and Cortez The Killer

Written by on 03.13.2013 | Neil Young, News

If you’ve been keeping up with our coverage of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Alchemy World Tour which began in August of 2012 and is currently slated to run through August ’13, you know that Ol’ Neil and his band don’t alter their setlists that much from night to night. That changed in a big way last night when the legendary rocker and his legendary band played the smallest room Young has ever performed at in Australia and treated fans to a scorching performance.

Last night’s show, which took place at the 5,000 seat The Plenary in Melbourne, was taped for a future concert film and extended past the three-hour mark. All in all, Neil Young and Crazy Horse performed 18 songs – three more than at any show so far this tour. Dangerbird, Barstool Blues and Sedan Delivery were each played for the first time on the Alchemy Tour and the show also featured the first version of Cortez The Killer since November.

Here’s last night’s setlist…

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Debut New Tune and Add Jam Segment To Hey Hey, My My at Australian Tour Opener

Written by on 03.03.2013 | Neil Young, News, Videos

Neil Young and Crazy Horse played their first show of the year last night, when they opened a brief Australian/New Zealand tour at Perth Arena in Perth, Australia. While they mostly stuck to the same script as 2012′s Alchemy tour dates, there were a few surprises for the Aussie crowd.

For their fifth song of the 13-song main set, Neil and his longtime band debuted a new original called Hole In The Sky. According to our friends at Thrasher’s Wheat, the song references the ozone layer. At last year’s shows Young broke up his main set with an acoustic performance of The Needle and the Damage Done. Yesterday he substituted his classic song Heart of Gold which made its Alchemy Tour debut. Also of note, Neil and the Horse added a bit of a noise jam to the end of Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black). The group vamps on a new segment in which they sing “Don’t Say It’s Over” again and again. Check it out… (starts at 5:30 mark)

Full Show Friday: Neil Young with Poncho and The MGs @ Rock Am Ring 2002 (Professionally Shot)

Written by on 03.01.2013 | Booker T, Full Show Friday, Neil Young

For this week’s Full Show Friday we take the Hidden Track Time Machine back to 2002 for a stirring performance by Neil Young with Poncho and The MGs. Ol’ Neil was headlining the Rock am Ring Festival in Nürburgring, Germany with a band that mixed Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro with Booker T. and The MGs and his whole set was broadcast on famed German live music show Rockpalast.

Young was in fine form on this night as he mixed his greatest songs such as The Loner, Cinnamon Girl, Cortez The Killer and Down By The River with what was then more recent material such as Sleeps With Angels and Let’s Roll. The quality of the footage is stunning, but you’ll stay for the performance.

Here’s the setlist…

When You Dance I Can Really Love / The Loner / Differently / Sleeps With Angels / Are You Passionate? / Goin’ Home / Cinnamon Girl / Cortez The Killer / Let’s Roll / Powderfinger / Quit (Don’t Say You Love Me) / She’s A Healer / All Along The Watchtower / Two Old Friends / Mr. Soul / Down By The River // F*!#in’ Up / Helpless

Keep Your Cell Phone In Your Pocket at Neil Young Shows

Written by on 12.20.2012 | Neil Young, News

Earlier this month Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Alchemy Tour visited Bridgeport, Connecticut where according to our friends at Thrasher’s Wheat the legendary rockers took offense to a member of the crowd constantly using their smartphone throughout the start of the show. The situation came to a head during Fuckin’ Up when Young cursed at, pointed at and mocked the fan.

Written by on 12.05.2012 | Neil Young, News, Trey

Surprising news out of the Trey Anastasio camp this morning as it has been announced that Big Red will play a special solo acoustic set at a special benefit concert at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey opening up for Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Young put the show together to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Anastasio, a New Jersey native, will support his old friend (Phish teamed up with Neil at Farm Aid and the Bridge School Benefits in 1998). Let’s hope Trey rocks out with Crazy Horse during the main set.

Video: Neil Young on The Daily Show

Written by on 11.29.2012 | Neil Young, Videos

Neil Young famously quit Buffalo Springfield rather than make an appearance on The Night Show with Johnny Carson back in the ’60s, but ol’ Neil has come around on his distaste for TV. On the occasion of Jon Stewart’s 50th birthday, Neil Young stopped by The Daily Show to mainly talk about his new book – Waging Heavy Peace, but that was only the start of an interesting conversation.

Stewart has shown an ability to put his guests at ease so we get a glimpse of their personalities and last night was no exception. Here’s the whole extended interview…

Video: Neil Young and Crazy Horse – Helpless

Written by on 11.20.2012 | Neil Young, Videos

Last week we told you about Neil Young and Crazy Horse dusting off the electric version of Helpless for the first time in decades. Well last night they did it again as an encore at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, a fitting place considering some of the local references within the song.

The video we showed off of the Helpless bust out in Calgary wasn’t great, but there’s a fabulous clip of yesterday’s take thanks to YouTuber carsoni4. We couldn’t help but share it. Take a look…

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Finally Play Helpless

Written by on 11.15.2012 | Neil Young, Videos

The latest leg of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Alchemy Tour kicked off this past weekend in Seattle, but the first real bust out of the leg took place on Tuesday in Calgary. When the legendary rocker and his longtime backing band returned to the stage at the Saddledome for an encore, they lit into a revved up version of the 1970 classic Helpless.

While Neil has performed Helpless at Crazy Horse shows in the past, it was usually played during his solo, acoustic portion of the show. According to a commenter at Thrasher’s Wheat, Tuesday’s performance marked the first electric Crazy Horse take on Helpless since 1976. After hearing so many pretty, downtempo versions of Helpless, we dig this more fast-paced, hard-edged take…

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Tour Continues in Seattle – Setlist, Videos, Analysis From Third Leg Opener

Written by on 11.11.2012 | Neil Young, News, Videos

The first Neil Young and Crazy Horse tour in eight years continued last night at Key Arena in Seattle after a two-week layoff. This month-long third leg of the Alchemy Tour will bring the band coast-to-coast with the next eight shows scheduled for Canada. Following the Trans-Continental, Vancouver to Ottawa portion of the jaunt, Young and his longtime backing band will head to the Northeast for performances in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Fairfax, Brooklyn and Bridgeport.

[Neil Young Alchemy Tour Setlists in Grid Form by Sugarmtn.org]

Last night in Seattle, the group stuck to a similar script as the first two legs with a focus on songs from their new Psychedelic Pill LP and a smattering of “hits.” As you can see from the grid above (click for full size), thanks to the fine folks at Sugar Mountain, the setlists have been very similar from show to show. The variation usually comes in the encore slot where Tonight’s The Night got the call at yesterday’s show for only the fourth time this tour.

Set: Love and Only Love, Powderfinger, Born In Ontario, Walk Like A Giant, Needle and the Damage Done, Twisted Road, Singer Without A Song, Ramada Inn, Cinnamon Girl, Fuckin’ Up, Mr. Soul, Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)

Encore: Tonight’s The Night

Thanks to Billy Harrell, we can watch most of last night’s Neil Young and Crazy Horse show as he’s shared a batch of the best fan-shot videos we’ve seen so far of the band in action. The eight clips feature all the classic Neil tunes and none of the new songs, hope you don’t mind.

Guns N’ Roses Team Up With Neil Young For Don’t Let It Bring You Down at Day Two of Bridge School Benefit Concert

While we pointed you towards video of Guns N’ Roses’ Bridge School Benefit debut on Saturday at Shoreline, the band had a major change in their set for the second day of the two-day event. Towards the end of GN’R's set, lead singer Axl Rose stepped to the mic and introduced the benefit’s founder and host Neil Young to partake in a fantastic version of Neil’s 1970 classic Don’t Let It Bring You Down.

Axl and Neil shared vocals on Don’t Let It Bring You Down. At the end Rose told the crowd, “this is a song that always gave me some hope through the years and we asked Neil if we could do it.”

Stormy Mondays: Neil Young’s Harvesting Days

Written by on 10.22.2012 | Neil Young, Stormy Mondays

This week we turn our attention to Neil Young, whose new album with Crazy Horse looks to be an odyssey through some very long-form material. An open ended take is nothing for Neil, however; or at least on stage anyway. Featured here is a twenty plus minute Down By The River from 1984 when Neil was playing with The International Harvesters. It has a rambling, amusing talk intro that precedes some very hectic playing. I’ve also included a really up-tempo version of Tonight’s the Night from earlier in the same year, a truly great rendition of the song. As always, enjoy!
