Equifunk Sunday Sessions: London Souls, M&Ms, Heavy Pets, Pork Tornado, Revivalists + Name Your Own Super Group

Written by on 05.17.2013 | Equifunk, Festivals, News

Earlier this week we shared the news that Equifunk organizers added another full day worth of music to this year’s fest. At that time Pork Tornado featuring Jon Fishman was announced as the day’s headliner, with the promise of more acts to come. Today, we’ve found out who those acts are.

We’re particularly intrigued by the fest’s offer for attendees to give a name to a supergroup they’ve put together to play the “Sunday Sessions.” This supremely talented quintet features guitarist Eddie Roberts and bassist Pete Shand of The New Mastersounds as well as Galactic drummer Stanton Moore,  keyboardist Nigel Hall and Lettuce / TAB saxophonist James Casey. We suggest “Fucking Badasses On Parade,” but Equifunk probably won’t go for that.

Other Sunday Sessions acts include HT faves The London Souls, The Heavy Pets and The Main Squeeze. And why have one supergroup when you can have two as the M&Ms – a group made up of Moore, Marco Benevento, Robert Mercurio, Papa Mali and Maceo Parker are also on board for Sunday Sessions. Soulive and the Shady Horns with Maceo Parker, The New Mastersounds, JJ Grey with Mofro, Anders Osborne and Keller Williams with More Than A Little are among the acts set to play Equifunk 13′, which takes place at Camps Equinunk and Blue Ridge in Pennsylvania’s Poconos on Aug. 16 – 18.

Couch Tour Alert: MTV To Webcast Hangout Music Festival

UPDATE 1:30PM ET 5/18: Unfortunately MTV has revised the webcast schedule and many acts we were very much looking forward to have been removed. We’ve updated the schedule below. [Hat Tip - Ira Morris]

The Hangout Music Fest kicked off last night in Gulf Shores, AL and we thought we’d only get to hear second hand reports since no webcast had been announced. That changed this morning when MTV revealed they would be offering two feeds live from the fest featuring many of most anticipated performances. In addition, MTV Networks will provide television updates and highlights across MTV, VH1, CMT, MTV2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, VH1 Classic, CMT Pure and Palladia.

The webcast begins at 12:30 ET this afternoon and will run through Sunday night. HT faves The Breeders, Toots And The Maytals, Jim James, Passion Pit, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Gov’t Mule, The Roots, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Trey Anastasio Band and Stevie Wonder will be among the acts broadcast. You can watch the broadcast HERE.

Here’s the full webcast schedule by feed (All Times ET)…

Interlocken Festival: Neil Young, Furthur, Black Crowes

The first lineup announcement from the Interlocken Festival has just been made by our friends at Relix. Put together by H.O.R.D.E. co-founder Dave Frey and Relix publisher Pete Shapiro, the event will take place from September 5 – 8 at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia. Today, we’ve found out that Furthur, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Black Crowes and String Cheese Incident will be among the bands performing at the first of what we hope will be many Interlocken’s. In addition, country-rocker Zac Brown will team up with The String Cheese Incident at the fest.

We’re already digging on the lineup which makes us think of what the top of a 2013 Bonnaroo lineup would look like if organizers kept the focus on jam acts. According to the Interlocken website, “Many of the artists will be performing at Interlocken over multiple days, and will be featured in unique and exciting artist pairings – with additional artists to be announced soon.” With guys like Shapiro and Frey in charge, we know we’re in good hands and can’t wait to see the rest of the lineup and these “exciting artist pairings.”

“Most festivals these days are trying to be everything to everyone — very eclectic with an emphasis on a large number of artists in various genres,” says Shapiro in a statement to Relix. “With Interlocken, we want to break away from that mold and create something more identifiable and distinct.”

Early-bird tickets go on sale May 23rd at 10AM ET.

Beck And All-Star Cast To Perform Song Reader

Written by on 05.16.2013 | Beck, News

The always innovative Beck added an old spin to new music last December when he released a book of sheet music containing new original tunes called Song Reader. Since Song Reader came out, its songs have been interpreted by a who’s who of musicians, but not by Beck himself. According to Spin, that will change on July 4.

Beck will team will an all-star cast that includes Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, Franz Ferdinand, the Staves, the Guillemots, Michael Kiwanuka, James Yorkston, Beth Orton, Charlotte Gainsbourg and the Pictish Trail to perform tracks from Song Reader at London’s The Barbican on July 4. Spin reports that more acts will be announced later. The house band backing these wonderful musicians will be made up of drummer Seb Rochford, bassist Tom Herbert, and guitarist Dave Okumu under the musical direction of Ed Harcourt and David Coulter.

As we reported earlier, Beck will perform a handful of shows in the Northeast this summer.

Anders Osborne Rambles With Phil & Members of Furthur

Written by on 05.16.2013 | Anders Osborne, Furthur, News, Phil Lesh

Last night at Terrapin Crossroads, Furthur members Phil Lesh, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo and Jeff Chimenti teamed up with guitarist Anders Osborne for a West Coast Ramble. Osborne had already made his mark at last month’s Spring Rambles with Luther Dickinson, but seemed to have picked up where he left off from those memorable shows.

The first set was filled with treats such as Anders-sung covers of Ramblin’ Man by the Allman Brothers Band, Neil Young’s Heart Of Gold and Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff as well as Grateful Dead rarity Reuben and Cerise. In addition to Reuben and Cerise, John Kadlecik handled vocals on Grateful Dead staples Deal, Ramble On Rose and They Love Each Other.

Set One: Deal (jk), Ramblin’ Man (ao), Reuben And Cerise (jk) > Sugaree (ao), Ramble On Rose (jk), Heart Of Gold (ao), They Love Each Other (jk), I Shot The Sheriff (ao)

Set Two: Jam > Scarlet (jk,ao) > The Harder They Come (ao) > Fire On The Mountain (ao), Small Spacey Jam > Dark Star v1 (all) > The Other One (pl) > Dark Star v2 (all) > St. Stephen (all) > Midnight Hour (ao)

Encore: Burning on the Inside (ao)

[Setlist via PhilZone.org]

The second set opened with an interesting segment that saw the ensemble insert a cover of The Harder They Come into the usual Scarlet > Fire pairing. Then, the band went into Primal Dead mode for a Dark Star > The Other One > Dark Star > St. Stephen sequence before ending the set with the Anders-sung Midnight Hour. Osborne had a chance to show off one of his originals as Burning On The Inside served as the encore.

Listen to Anders, Phil, John, Joe and Jeff cover Ramblin’ Man…

Transaction Report: Eric Avery Quits Nine Inch Nails

Written by on 05.15.2013 | News, NIN

Back in February we shared the news that Trent Reznor was reforming his Nine Inch Nails project. We were particularly excited to see guitarist Adrian Belew and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery would be aboard for this new version of NIN. While Nine Inch Nails has two months before the new band makes their debut, today they lost a member as Avery has called it quits.

Avery has decided to focus on his musical life in L.A. and felt “overwhelmed” by what’s planned for NIN. According to a note on the bassist’s Facebook Page, Trent was understanding of Eric’s decision.

Here’s Eric Avery’s statement via his Facebook Page

its with very mixed emotions i tell you all that im pulling out of NIN. i know. its been a tough call and i don’t know if its the right one. but i really want to focus on my musical life here in la, on film work in particular. as the tour dates kept growing… i just got overwhelmed. i just got home from a year of heavy travel with garbage, the idea of leaving town for another year and a half, and with all the intensity that nails demands… fortunately my friend Trent understands all this and appreciated my pulling the plug now instead of deep into 2013 and 14. go get em gentlemen.

Nine Inch Nails will play their first gig at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival on July 26. The group’s first U.S. performance will be as a headliner of Lollapalooza. No word yet on Avery’s replacement.

Widespread Panic Teams For Two w/ Umphrey’s McGee

Two of our favorite jam acts will team up this October for a pair of shows at Family Circle Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina on October 4 and 5. Jam titans Widespread Panic will headline with Chicago-based sextet Umphrey’s McGee on as support.

Panic and UM have crossed paths a number of times. Our favorite occurrence on July 13, 2010 when UM keyboardist Joel Cummins sat in with Widespread on Space Wrangler and No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature. We’d be very surprised if the two groups don’t collaborate in Charleston. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 17, at 10AM ET via Ticketmaster and at the venue’s box office.
