R. Kelly Teams With Phoenix For Ignition (Remix) / 1901 Mashup

Written by on 04.14.2013 | Coachella, Festivals, Phoenix, R. Kelly, Videos

All eyes were on Phoenix last night for their first-ever headlining set at Coachella. Would Daft Punk sit-in with the band as had been heavily rumored and as had happened at MSG in 2010? While that didn’t happen, the French rockers did have a surprise in store for the Indio crowd.

Rapper R. Kelly emerged during Phoenix’s encore for a mashup of Kelly’s 2003 hit Ignition (Remix) and the French act’s 2009 blockbuster 1901. This odd couple pairing actually worked pretty well with Phoenix throwing in a bit of Chloroform from the soon-to-be-released Entertainment and R. Kelly responding in kind with I’m A Flirt. Watch webcast video of the mashup…

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Phoenix Rises Again

Written by on 04.08.2013 | Phoenix, Pullin' Tubes

Prior to 2009 if you had asked most music fans if they had heard of Phoenix, they’d likely have thought that you were talking about Arizona’s capital city and not the Parisian act. That all changed with the release of the band’s fourth studio album – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The record featured ear-wormy electro-disco-rock tracks like Lasso, 1901 and Lisztomania, which propelled Thomas Mars & Co. from a little known underground band to a critical and commercial success story seemingly overnight. While they had their hype machine working early, with a song featured during the Super Bowl, the band’s big break came when they made their debut appearance on Saturday Night Live, where they have the rare distinction of playing three songs on the long-running late-night sketch show.

With Phoenix gearing up for the release of their long-awaited follow-up Bankrupt!, which hits stores on April 23, the band made a return trip to 30 Rock, as they were once again booked to perform at Studio 8H this past weekend. While they only got the standard two song appearance this time around, the band offered up takes on the album’s lead single Entertainment, as well as the brand new tracks Trying To Be Cool / Drakkar Noir. Let’s check it out..

Phoenix Releases First Single From Bankrupt! – Entertainment

Written by on 02.18.2013 | Audio, Phoenix

Nearly four years after the release of their breakthrough fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, french rockers Phoenix have finally given fans a taste of the soon-to-be-released Bankrupt! with the premiere of the new single Entertainment. The group set the bar high with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix thanks to earwormy singles Lisztomania and 1901, which helped the album achieve gold status and launched them from the bottom of festival lineups towards the top.

Upon first listen Entertainment isn’t a huge departure from the synth-oriented pop-rock of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Thomas Mars and Co. also shared a snippet of Bourgeois from the new LP which sounds a bit more adventurous. You can listen to both right here…

Bankrupt! is due out on April 23rd. Let us know what you think of the new tracks.

Daft Punk @ Coachella 2013? The Problem With Trusting Songkick

We’re approaching the part of the year when many major music festivals reveal their lineup. Before these reveals, music blogs and message board users do their best to figure out who’s playing where before the official announcements. Sometimes this excitement leads to the spreading of false information such as the many sites that reported Prince would headline Bonnaroo 2012.

[Screengrab via Listen Before You Buy]

Over the past 24 hours word has spread that Daft Punk, Phoenix and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will play Coachella 2013. What was the source of this information? An email from concert database site Songkick which showed those bands and The Rolling Stones aboard for the event. Someone took a screenshot of the email and word of the rumored appearances spread like wildfire. Even Rolling Stone picked it up.
