Hidden Flick: Hidden History – Led Zeppelin & Rolling Stones

History comes when the mind is awake, and, at this time of the year, it is often difficult to just sit down and think about what has happened, what has almost transpired, and what has not. Often, one gets a fleeting glimpse of what may or may not be true, but it appears more like a dream, rather than some form of historical fact. And, hey, life can appear more active in that sense, anyway. One should be able to breeze through the pages of some spiritual, or cultural, or metaphysical history book, and re-write the pages, insert a new belief, a new idea, a new concept for the future, re-conceiving events to place them into a proper modern context.

Ahhh…such a dangerous game, no?

Which is all a really pompous way to introduce the current modus operandi at hand as we dig into a pair of films for this edition of Hidden Flick, and enter the post-death, maybe even the post-zombie apocalypse version of this little column that somehow could. Perhaps, this is the Undead Season—the one where anything is possible, and nothing, or no one, ever dies. Either that, or we continue to look at old portraits in a new frame—consistently checking to see “did that really happen, or is my third eye, my tricky little mind’s eye, playing games with me/us/it?”

History is a living breathing beast, and, so, we use that pulsating thought to explore two documents released this year, which focus a new light on some rather old subjects, or a fresh perspective on some off-the-radar, hidden thought process. Indeed, this edition will feature the Rolling Stones’ Charlie Is My Darling and Led Zeppelin’s Celebration Day.

Then and Now: The Rolling Stones – Lady Jane

Written by on 11.30.2012 | Rolling Stones, Then and Now

Upon hearing the news that The Rolling Stones had dusted off Mother’s Little Helper b-side Lady Jane after 45 years last night at the 02 Arena in London, we figured this tune – after one of the lengthiest bust outs in rock history – was the fitting subject for our latest Then and Now column.

Way back in 1966 The Rolling Stones performed Lady Jane on The Ed Sullivan Show. Notice Brian Jones added to the Elizabethan vibe by using a dulcimer.

And now check out one of the first clips to surface of last night’s Lady Jane. More similar to the studio version, Chuck Leavell simulates a harpsichord on keys while Ron Wood tackles the dulcimer part by using a 12-string acoustic guitar.

Rolling Stones @ London 02 Arena #2 – Setlist

Written by on 11.29.2012 | News, Rolling Stones, Setlists

The Rolling Stones have just stepped off stage at the 02 Arena in London for their second of two shows at the venue that have opened the 50 & Counting Tour. While tonight’s setlist featured many similarities to what they played on Sunday, there were some notable changes. First off, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine took over Mary J. Blige’s role in singing Gimme Shelter. Also, instead of having Jeff Beck out to perform on Going Down like they did on Sunday, Eric Clapton emerged to tackle Muddy Waters’ (via McKinley Morganfield) Champagne and Reefer. Both Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman rocked on the same songs they played on earlier this week.

The Last Time saw action for its run debut as did Lady Jane which was performed for the first time since Brian Jones passed away in 1969. In fact, the last one was thought to have taken place in 1967 – 45 years ago! Let It Bleed track Live With Me got the call for its initial 50 and Counting performance along with Satisfaction.

Setlist…

MAIN SET: Get Off Of My Cloud,  I Wanna Be Your Man,  The Last Time,  Paint It Black,  Gimme Shelter (with Florence Welch),  Lady Jane,  Champagne And Reefer (with Eric Clapton),  Live With Me,  Miss You,  One More Shot,  Doom And Gloom,  It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) (with Bill Wyman), Honky Tonk Women (with Bill Wyman),  Band Intros,  Before They Make Me Run,  Happy,  Midnight Rambler (with Mick Taylor),  Start Me Up,  Tumbling Dice,  Brown Sugar,  Sympathy For The Devil

ENCORE  You Can’t Always Get What You Want (w/ Choirs),  Jumpin’ Jack Flash,  (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

The tour continues at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on December 8th.

Boot Camp: The Last Time Mick Taylor Sat In With The Stones

Last night The Rolling Stones kicked off a celebration of their 50th Anniversary at the 02 Arena in London, where they filled the 23-song performance with rarities and guest spots. One of those guests was former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor who joined the band in 1969 before resigning in 1974. Yet yesterday wasn’t the first time Taylor performed with his old mates since he quit as he sat in for a large part of the Stones’ December 14, 1981 show at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

Taylor was in Kansas City for a gig with Alvin Lee leading to his guest spot at the Kemper. Ronnie Wood explained in his autobiography, “On the ’81 tour in Kansas City, we heard that Mick Taylor was in town we invited him up on stage for a few numbers. Perhaps the reunion over excited him. He seemed to refuse to realize how much the band had changed since his departure. He shocked us with how loud he was blasting it. Bulldozing through parts of songs that should have been subtle, ignoring the breaks and taking uninvited solos. And the volume! I thought me and Keith play loud, but he was easily three times louder than us. I was standing next to him, passing along messages from Keith who would say, ‘Tell that @#$%& to turn it down!’ I was a little more diplomatic: ‘Um, Mick, the song is finished’ or ‘It’s in E, not F.’ Afterwards, Keith told me, ‘It’s a good thing you were standing in between us or I’d have flattened him.’ But he’s a lovely man and it was great to see him.”

Rolling Stones @ Kemper Arena – December 14th, 1981

Set: Under My Thumb/When The Whip Comes Down/Let’s Spend The Night Together/Shattered/Neighbours/Black Limousine/Just My Imagination/ Twenty Flight Rock/Going To A Go Go/Let Me Go/Time Is On My Side/ Beast Of Burden/Waiting On A Friend/Let It Bleed/You Can’t Always Get What You Want/Band introduction/Little T & A/Tumbling Dice/She’s So Cold/Hang Fire/Miss You/Honky Tonk Women/Brown Sugar/Start Me Up/ Jumping Jack Flash/Satisfaction

Note: With special guest Mick Taylor on guitar. Probably from Black Limousine
up to You Can’t Always Get What You Want and also on Satisfaction

[Info via Complete Works of The Rolling Stones]

Despite what Wood said, the soundboard recording that circulates tells a different story. When you can make out Taylor’s guitar licks, he adds to the songs, he doesn’t take away from them. Mick T. stayed on stage during a number of tunes from after his tenure in the group and he must’ve turned his volume down as you can’t hear his distinctive tone on those songs. Taylor especially shines on You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Head over to Soundaboard to download the liberated soundboard bootleg “Mick Taylor, We Love You and We’ll Always Do” in either FLAC or MP3 format.

Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary @ 02 Arena: Setlist

Written by on 11.25.2012 | Rolling Stones, Setlists

The Rolling Stones have finally kicked off their long-awaited 50th Anniversary Run this evening at London’s 02 Arena. Following a few “surprise shows” at intimate venues, the five-show run begins with a pair of performances at the 20,000-capacity 02 before heading across the Atlantic for shows at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (Dec. 8th) and Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center (Dec. 13th and 15th). The core Stones of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts were joined by bassist Daryl Jones, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, multi-instrumentalist Tim Ries, saxophone wiz Bobby Keys and vocalists Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer for most of the performance.

I Wanna Be Your Man, which was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and released by Mick and Co. in 1963 (The Beatles also recorded it for With The Beatles), yet went unplayed in concert since 1964, opened the show.  The group stuck to early favorites for the start of the set, before welcoming their first guest, Mary J. Blige, for Gimme Shelter. Following a string of ’70s classics, Jeff Beck came out to play on I’m Going Down. Out of Control from 1997′s Bridges To Babylon was the only contribution from the ’90s and led into the evening’s only debut – One More Shot from the recently released greatest hits compilation GRRR! The other new tune from GRRR!, Doom and Gloom had been performed at the warmup shows and came right after One More Shot tonight.

Original Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman and one-time Stones guitarist Mick Taylor each made appearances. Wyman emerged for It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It) and Honky Tonk Women while Taylor jammed with his old mates on Midnight Rambler. Taylor last appeared with The Rolling Stones at a 1981 show in Kansas City.  The Stones finished the main set by their lonesomes, reeling off hits Miss You, Start Me Up, Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar and Sympathy For The Devil to bring the two-hour set to a close. When they returned for the encore, the Stones were augmented by the London Youth Choir for You Can’t Always Get What You Want, the first time they had performed the tune with a choir. Jumpin’ Jack Flash was the second song in the encore slot and the last tune of the night.

The Night Bonnie Raitt Sang Shine A Light With The Stones

Written by on 11.09.2012 | Bonnie Raitt, Rolling Stones, Videos

The Rolling Stones’ official YouTube channel has been great as of late since the band’s representatives started filling the channel with pro-shot videos of live performances, interviews, backstage footage, MTV-style music videos and more goodies from throughout the years. For the latest share, a documentary-style clip about Bonnie Raitt’s sit-in with Mick and the band on Shine A Light at Vancouver’s BC Place on November 25th, 2006 has surfaced.

Raitt talks about her long history with the band and Jagger discusses how he originally wrote the song in the four minute clip. Bonnie’s voice fits the tune like a glove. Here’s a look at the mini-doc…

Audio: Rolling Stones – One More Shot

Written by on 11.07.2012 | Audio, News, Rolling Stones

Next week the new Rolling Stones greatest hits compilation, entitled GRRR!, comes out. Besides a collection of the legendary rockers’ best tunes (besides Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ – what’s up with that?), GRRR! also includes two new tracks. We already heard Doom and Gloom which we said “has the classic Stones sound with a modern twist” and today we get to feast our ears on One More Shot.

Doom and Gloom may have had a “modern twist,” but One More Shot seems like a re-tread. It’s like the band took one part Street Fighting Man, one part Start Me Up and one part Gimme Shelter; mixed ‘em all up, threw it a batch of new lyrics and tacked the song onto GRRR! Hey, at this point, 50 years into their career, we’re just glad the Stones aren’t delivering pure crap. Plus, there’s something to be said for that classic Stones sound. But don’t take our word for it, listen yourself…

Written by on 10.30.2012 | News, Rolling Stones

Last night at le Theatre Mogador in Paris, The Rolling Stones played their second “secret” warmup show in the past week. Following last Thursday’s performance at La Trebendo in the French capital, the Stones treated a bigger crowd to a 12-song “greatest hits” set yesterday.

At le Theatre Mogador, the core Rolling Stones band of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Charlie Watts, Darryl Jones and Chuck Leavell were joined by longtime Stones backing vocalist Bernard Fowler who was not on hand at La Trebendo. All Down The Line, You Got Me Rocking, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Honky Tonk Women all made the setlist last night after not making the cut last Thursday. Meanwhile, Route 66, Shattered, When The Whip Comes Down and Champagne and Reefer were the only songs played at the first “secret show” that weren’t performed last night.

Here’s the setlist from last night’s Rolling Stones show…

Set: It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It), All Down The Line, You Got Me Rocking, Tumbling Dice, Miss You, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Doom And Gloom, Midnight Rambler, Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, Jumping Jack Flash

Encore: Brown Sugar

No word yet on any future “secret shows.” The Rolling Stones will celebrate their 50th Anniversary with four shows later this year – November 25 and 29 at London’s 02 Arena and December 13 and 15 at the Prudential Center in Newark. The gig on the 15th will be broadcast as a Pay-Per-View special.

Rolling Stones Share Footage of First Show Since 2007

Written by on 10.27.2012 | News, Rolling Stones, Setlists, Videos

In preparation for a series of shows to celebrate their 50th Anniversary, The Rolling Stones performed in public for the first time since 2007 on Thursday night at Le Trabendo in Paris. An intimate crowd of 600 was on hand to see the group barrel through 12 songs from throughout their career including the debut performance of Doom and Gloom. Along with 10 originals, The Stones covered Route 66 by Nat King Cole and Muddy Waters’ Champagne and Reefer.

While cell phones and cameras were prohibited, a fan-shot clip of Shattered and When The Whip Comes Down has surfaced which shows a band rough around the edges. The Paris performance featured the core version of The Rolling Stones – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Darryl Jones and Chuck Leavell – a far cry from their most recent tour when seven additional musicians backed the “core band.” Over on YouTube, The Rolling Stones posted a short video of Jumpin’ Jack Flash from Paris which finds Wood and Keef in fine form…

Mick Taylor & Bill Wyman to Play at Rolling Stones 50th

Written by on 10.24.2012 | News, Rolling Stones

The upcoming issue of Rolling Stone will feature a behind-the-scenes look at The Rolling Stones’ preparations for four 50th Anniversary shows planned for November and December in London and Newark. Today, the mag’s website posted a preview of the article that confirmed a bit of news that had been hinted at for months. Former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and bassist Bill Wyman will play with their old mates at the London and Newark performances.

Rolling Stone scribe Brian Hiatt spoke with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards about the bridging of their tense relationship, rehearsals for the upcoming shows and why the ticket prices “sound about right.” Within the article the pair reveal that Taylor and Wyman will “come on board for the four shows, but only as guests on a few songs.” Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood also told Hiatt that “more guests are likely to pop by” and names Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as possibilities.

Rolling Stones Tease 50th Anniversary Shows Setlist

Written by on 10.16.2012 | News, Rolling Stones, Setlists

Yesterday, just before The Rolling Stones announced four 50th Anniversary shows at the 02 Arena in London and The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, they posted a hand-written list of songs placed on a piano that at the time garnered little notice. Now that the shows have been announced, it’s thought that the list is the potential running order for the upcoming gigs.

[via @RollingStones]

The list contains most of the band’s biggest hits as well as choice covers from their early days. What’s surprising is that the two new songs, Doom and Gloom and One Last Shot, are nowhere to be found. Also, She’s So Cold is listed twice. So for all we know this could just be the running order for a rehearsal. Regardless, it only serves to get us more excited for the shows.

Songs Listed…

“She’s So Cold”
“You Got Me Rocking”
“All Down The Line”
“Respectable”
“Tumbling Dice”
“Honky Tonk Woman”
“Beast Of Burden”
“Wild Horses”
“Can’t Always Get”
“It’s All Over Now”
“Lady Jane”
“Route 66″
“Little Red Rooster”
“Miss You”
“Not Fade Away”
“She’s So Cold”
“Start Me”
“Sweet Virginia”
“Worried About You”
“Paint It Black”
“The Last Time”
“Ruby Tuesday”
“Midnight Rambler”

The final show of the run will be broadcast as a Pay-Per-View special.

Rolling Stones To Team With WWE For 50th Anniversary Show “One More Shot” Pay-Per-View Broadcast From Newark

Written by on 10.15.2012 | News, Rolling Stones

Odds are that not many Rolling Stones fans will be able to score tickets to the band’s four 50th Anniversary shows in Newark and London that were finally announced earlier today and are scheduled for late 2012. Well, we can take some solace in the fact that the fourth and final show, set to take place at Newark’s Prudential Center on December 15th, will be webcast on a Pay-Per-View basis around the world.

For the U.S. version of the broadcast, billed as “One More Shot,” The Rolling Stones have teamed with an organization that’s very familiar with Pay-Per-Views – wrestling’s WWE – to distribute the concert. Internationally, The Rolling Stones will work with Endemol. We like this part of the announcement

“50 and Counting is set to be a phenomenal global celebration of the Rolling Stones and we’ll soon be announcing further plans to make it an interactive experience for fans like no other,” said Tim Hincks, president of Endemol Group.

No word yet on how much the One More Shot Pay-Per-View will cost and whether former Stones members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor will participate in one or more of the 50th Anniversary shows.
