Allman Brothers Band To Share Stage With Steve Winwood

Written by on 04.16.2013 | Allmans, Steve Winwood, Tour Dates

For the past month or so rumors have been circulating among Allman Brothers Band fans that the Southern Rockers would team up with Steve Winwood for a series of shows this summer. Today we have our most definitive proof of the pairing as a listing for an August 28th show at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, New York featuring the two acts has appeared on LiveNation.com [screenshot here].

As of now that’s the only date listed, but we’d be surprised if Winwood and the Allmans don’t play more shows together besides the SPAC gig. The former Traffic multi-instrumentalist is set to tour with Rod Stewart in October and December after a batch of European dates that ends in mid-July, so he’s free in August and September. Meanwhile, the Allman Brothers, who only have appearances at this weekend’s Wanee Festival and August’s Peach Music Fest currently scheduled, have “a tour booked August/September” according to drummer Butch Trucks.

Perhaps the Allman Brothers were giving us a preview of this summer when they performed Can’t Find My Way Home at the last Beacon Residency 2013 show on March 17th with Jimmy Vivino…

Cover Alert: Brock Butler – Back In The High Life (Steve Winwood)

A few weeks back Brock Butler played a solo acoustic show at Pawley’s Island Tavern in South Carolina, where he offered his usual mix of covers from the ’60s through today, sung and performed as only he can. Among the groups Butler covered at the March 28th performance were Ryan Adams, Pete Townshend, Adele, Massive Attack, Paul Simon, Sublime, Pearl Jam and Mumford and Sons.

Taper Chris Davis recorded Brock’s show and has posted a fantastic soundboard matrix to the Live Music Archive. Today we want to shine a light on Butler’s cover of Back In The High Life by Steve Winwood which he performed at Pawley’s Island. Back In The High Life was the title track to Winwood’s blockbuster 1986 album that featured backing vocals from James Taylor. Brock does Winwood proud with his solo acoustic version…

Video: Steve Winwood w/ Warren Haynes – Gimme Some Lovin’

Legendary rocker Steve Winwood closed out last month’s Mountain Jam festival with a set filled with classics from nearly every period of his career, including his time as a teenaged member of the Spencer Davis Group. For SDG’s Gimme Some Lovin’ Winwood invited festival host Warren Haynes up to add soulful guitar to the 1966 hit. Radio Woodstock 100.1 has just posted professionally shot video of Haynes tearing up Gimme Some Lovin with Winwood and his band. Take a look…

Last night the group played the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London, where old pal Steve Winwood joined them for romps through Can’t Find My Way Home by Blind Faith and the Spencer Davis Group’s Gimme Some Lovin’. Steve Winwood Sings Pretzel Logic w/ Steely Dan

Written by on 10.27.2011 | Steely Dan, Steve Winwood

HT faves Steely Dan and Steve Winwood are currently in the midst of a co-headlining tour of Australia and New Zealand. While the first shows on the run, which marks only the second Steely Dan set of shows down under, didn’t feature any collaborations between the legendary acts, Winwood sat in with the Dan for Pretzel Logic in Sydney on Tuesday night.

Steely Dan w/ Steve Winwood – Pretzel Logic

Not only does Winwood add his signature organ swirls to the mix, but he also takes lead vocals on the title track from Steely Dan’s third studio album. Stevie’s sit-in went down during the encore at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Both bands are in Melbourne this evening for a performance at Rod Laver Arena. All in all, the two acts have six Oceania gigs left and we sure hope they continue to collaborate.

In other Steely Dan-related news, Donald Fagen will join The Levon Helm Band, Natalie Merchant, John Medeski, Graham Parker and Chris Wood at a benefit for victims of flooding from Tropical Storm Irene at the Broadway Theater at Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, New York on November 18. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.

The B List: Sing Me Back Home

[Published:03/29/07] Life on the road is tough, so it’s no surprise that many songwriters have used the concept of home as a theme throughout their songs. If I were living with 10 other dudes in a small van, I’d be homesick too. The word ‘home’ may conjure up different images to different people, but it seems the connection is a feeling of security and safety.

In the first six months of this column we’ve tried to focus squarely on the music. But today, this B List takes a look at the lyrics as we check out the 20 best songs about home (in no particular order). As usual, we did our best to find a YouTube video or audio clip to illustrate the songs listed:

1. Sing Me Back Home – Merle Haggard: This death-row tale was written in the late ’60s. As you see in the video, Merle used to play this song at a quick tempo, while the Grateful Dead slowed it down to a funeral dirge in their version. I favor the Dead’s version — nobody was better at emoting that sad soulful feeling like JerBear.

“Sing me back home with a song I used to hear”

2. Home Sweet Home – Motley Crue: Leave it to Motley Crue to write a tearjerker that can be classified as kickass. The number one Hair Metal Power Ballad returns to the B List due to its heartfelt lyrics by Nikki Sixx. I guess between shots of adrenaline and pussy, Sixx got a bit homesick.

“I had to run away high So I wouldn’t come home low”

3. Can’t Find My Way Home – Blind Faith: Blind Faith’s gift to the world is possibly the best song ever written about home. Pre MTV Unplugged Eric Clapton rarely picked up an acoustic. But on the version of Can’t Find May Way Home from Blind Faith’s eponoymous album, Clapton delivers one of his most beautiful performances of his career. To me, Can’t Find My Way Home is about being caught up in the excesses of life so much so that you lose vision of what’s important.

If this was an ordered list I’d have to say this song would probably be number one. My friend Hadley hit the nail on the head when he said “If there is a more hauntingly beautiful tune than this, either the standard acoustic version or the electric one, then I’ve never heard it.”

“And I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home”

Read on for the 17 remaining tunes on this week’s B List…

Hors d’Oeuvres: Ben Bridwell’s Big Moment

If you gave us a chance to sing Hunger Strike with Pearl Jam in front of a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden, we’d probably freak out, screw up some of the high harmonies, gush over the band and hug Eddie Vedder, so there’s something incredibly endearing about Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwell’s excitement as he lived the dream last Friday night…

There’s plenty of links to share, so let’s get to it…

Finally, we haven’t paid much attention to the latest leg of the Clapton/Winwood Tour because it’s happening in Europe, so we were shocked to find out the two legendary rockers have added a cover of The Shape I’m In by The Band to their repertoire. What we’re not shocked about is that their version rips. Only two clips of Eric and Steve covering The Shape I’m In have surfaced thus far and while this particular one doesn’t have great video, the audio is really good. Take a listen…

Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres: Conan Questions

Earlier today we found out that TBS has signed Conan O’Brien for a deal that gives our second favorite ginger an 11PM show on the basic cable station. While this NY Times article reveals how the deal went down, we’ve got a question about the show’s house band. Will Max Weinberg join Conan on TBS or sell his soul to Jay Leno?  If not, we’re sure Jimmy Vivino is up for it.

Speaking of Jimmy, we were really hoping Conan’s next show would be based in NYC – so that we can get Vivino back in the Big Apple – but alas the Times’ article mentions O’Brien will continue to produce his show in L.A.

Before we go out and enjoy the weather, here’s a quick link dump…

Finally, Santana has tapped legendary rocker Steve Winwood to open an extensive summer tour that kicks off on June 30. Santana generally invites his opening acts to sit in, so we can only imagine the possibilities of Stevie and Carlos tearing up a Black Magic Woman or a Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys. The Santana Fan Club presale starts tomorrow at santanafanclub.com.
