Summer Camp Late Nights: STS9, moe., Big Gigantic

[UPDATE 2/15:] Yonder Mountain String Band will join moe. in the Red Barn on 5/24

Each year the organizers of the Summer Camp Music Festival hold “Late Nights” at the Red Barn on the Three Sisters Park property. These concerts are ticketed separately from the rest of the festival “due to the limited capacity of the barn.” The extra income these shows provide probably doesn’t hurt either. Recently, Summer Camp organizers have announced most of the acts set to play this year’s Late Nights during the three-day festival which takes place in Chillicothe, Illin. on May 24 – 26.

Jam stalwarts moe. and Yonder Mountain String Band will play the Red Barn on Friday, May 24th. STS9, Big Gigantic, Griz and Gramatik will perform at the Red Barn on Saturday, May 25th, while Thievery Corporation and Zeds Dead close out the fest will a late night on Sunday, May 26th. Late Night show tickets are available as part of the event’s VIP Upgrade packages. Pre-sales for individual Late Nights will be announced HERE closer to the festival. Other Summer Camp late night options, which are included in the price of a festival ticket, are Late Night Campfire Jams, the Late Night Vibe Tent and Late Night at the Soulshine Tent.

In addition to three days of moe. and Umphrey’s McGee, other Summer Camp ’13 headliners include Trey Anastasio, STS9, The Avett Brothers and Thievery Corporation.

One of the days big sit-ins was Warren Haynes collaborating with G. Love and Special Sauce on Slim Harpo’s I’ve Got Love If You Want It. Haynes also sat in with moe. on Happy Hour Hero. The day also saw the return of Beatles/Pink Floyd tribute act Brain Damaged Eggmen featuring members of Umphrey’s McGee and the Disco Biscuits plus the second-ever performance from Gigantic Underground Conspiracy, a band made up of Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits / Conspirator), Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken (Big Gigantic) Chris Michetti (Conspirator / RAQ) and Ben Baruch (Underground Orchestra). Pictures From Scamp – Day Two: Bob Weir Sits In With Primus

One of the first big sit-ins of Summer Camp took place last night at the Moonshine Stage where Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir came out during the Primus set for The Other One at the second day of the annual festival in Chillicothe, Illin. The Primus/Bobby connection stems from drummer Jay Lane who has been the drummer in Ratdog since Weir formed the group and currently mans the kit for Primus as he did from the group’s start until 1988. In fact, Les takes credit for introducing Lane to original Ratdog bassist Rob Wasserman and “putting Ratdog together.”

[All Photos by Mike Sherry]

The last Claypool/Weir collaboration took place at All Good in 2009 when the Primus bassist emerged during a stuff jam and stuck around through a cover of Tomorrow Never Knows, a song that Bobby had sat in with Claypool’s solo band on at Gathering of the Vibes 2000 and 2007. Also at GOTV 2000, Les was Ratdog’s guest on a pair of bass jams and a Spanish Jam that led into, you guessed it, The Other One. Furthermore, back on January 31, 2006; Weir, Lane and Claypool teamed up for a set billed as “Performance 3″ at a tribute to “Dr. Don” Pearson at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Bobby was at the festival along with Jackie Greene and Chris Robinson for a trio set earlier in the day.

Other highlights from Friday at Summer Camp included moe. guitarist Al Schnier sitting in with Keller Williams and Umphrey’s launching into their second version of Tool’s 46 & 2.

Will You Pay? iClips To Charge For Festival Webcasts

Written by on 05.16.2012 | Festivals, iClips, News, Summer Camp

If you’re like us, you always wondered how iClips was able to provide free webcasts from many festivals each year. Well the free ride is coming to an end this summer as the webcaster has just announced the first phase of its “Summer of Jam” broadcasts which will be offered on a pay-per-view basis. So far, iClips has revealed that Summer Camp, Mountain Jam, moe.down, All Good and North Coast are five of the seven festivals that will be webcast as part of the Summer of Jam, with two more fests to be announced later.

iClips offers a slew of pre-order options for Summer of Jam including “The Ultimate” which includes access to all seven festival webcasts, a t-shirt, a sticker and archival broadcasts. Other options include the ability to pay-per-festival and pay-per-day of each festival. Prices will rise once this presale window is over. While iClips hasn’t revealed which sets will be broadcast, the Summer of Jam page mentions that Umphrey’s McGee, moe., The Flaming Lips, Primus, STS9, Gov’t Mule, Gogol Bordello, Lotus and Yonder Mountain String Band will be among the bands to be webcast this summer.

So, will you throw down for any/all of these festival webcasts? Will you wait until the schedules are announced even if you’ll have to pay more? Any guesses as to the other two fests iClips will broadcast? Leave a comment, post on our Facebook wall or send a tweet our way with your opinion on iClips moving away from the free webcast format.
