To say it’s been a rather intense summer for Simone Felice may be a bit of an understatement. This past June, The Duke & The King front man underwent emergency open heart surgery as a result of Aortic Stenosis resulting in the cancellation of his band’s summer tour dates. Just weeks after the surgery Simone made somewhat of a miraculous recovery, joining his former band mates The Felice Brothers on stage at the Clearwater Festival and played a handful of solo acoustic shows in support of his album Live From A Lonely Place – which was recorded around the same time.
Now with his health issues behind him, Simone can now concentrate on promoting his band’s sophomore album Long Live the Duke & the King, which will be released in the UK on September 27, with its stateside release to hopefully follow soon after. The Duke & The King, who will head across the pond of a series of dates throughout England, Ireland and Germany, recently dropped this video for their album’s first single – Shaky…
Just weeks removed from open heart surgery as a result of Aortic Stenosis, Simone Felice made his miraculous return to the stage this past weekend joining his former band mates and longtime HT faves The Felice Brothers during their scheduled set at the Clearwater Music Festival. Simone, who last year left the band for his own project The Duke & The King, strapped on a guitar to sing lead vocals on Radio Song…
The Felice Brothers next scheduled appearance will be at the first annual Nateva Music Festival on July 2, which kicks off a month-long tour that also includes a stop at the Newport Folk Festival on August 1, while Simone will head out for a solo tour that begins on August 7 at the City Winery.
Last week, we launched the first-ever Podcast to accompany this weekly feature and I was happy to see that a bunch of you downloaded it. We’re going to continue doing this every week. For those who missed it last week, it’s just one MP3 that you can download and take with you, it’s got all the selections that are embedded in the piece with a few extra fades to give it that real Podcast feel. This week, we’ve got relatively short compositions as our bookends with the jams sandwiched in the middle. Hope you enjoy it.

HT favorites The Duke & The King had the honor of opening for Levon Helm last week. This is a very nice recording and a nice lead-in for the jams to follow in this week’s edition. The Duke & The King next play April 2nd in Brooklyn.

A few months back we reported on the rather sad circumstance surrounding Simone Felice’s departure from HT faves The Felice Brothers (read his open letter for more details). The move has proved to be quite cathartic for the drummer/vocalist/novelist as he channeled his creative energies into a writing songs for a new project called The Duke & The King.
If Cat Stevens had headed to Woodstock during his 70s heyday he may have ended up with a album sounding close to the debut from The Duke & The King. The band, who mix Simone’s heartfelt, confessional lyrics with sweeping folk melodies, will release their debut album Nothing Gold Can Stay on Tuesday – marking the occasion with an album release show at New York’s Mercury Lounge. Let’s check out this incredible kitchen rehearsal performance of The Morning I Get To Hell…
The Duke & The King continue their tour through mid-August, and will then head across the pond for a string of UK dates in September.
