The Whigs: Mission Control

[rating=3.50]

Previously known as the “the best unsigned band in America” by Rolling Stone, The Whigs have found a home with Dave Matthews’ ATO Records. Their ATO debut, Mission Control combines the arena rock accessibility of The Foo Fighters and the beer fueled garage rock of The Replacements.

Like a Vibration kicks Mission Control off with urgency as Julian Dorio’s hydraulic drumming raises the tension and sets the pace.  Parker Gispert sounds like Dave Grohl vocally but adds some nice filler guitar rhythms that give The Whigs their melodic lo-fi garage sound.  “Sleep Sunshine” showcases the band’s warmer side, along with the slow burning “1000 Wives.” However,  The Whigs are best when they deliver the barn-burners of “Hot Bed” or the full throttle rock of “ Already Young.”  37 minutes makes for a short album, but The Whigs dominate with an urgency that’s lacking from most of today’s “garage rockers."
