Backstage Video: Robert Plant Chats With Roger Daltrey – 2002

What is it about today that has led to incredibly cool backstage videos surfacing? On top of the footage of Buddy Miles and Phish we came across this morning, we’ve found a video of The Who’s Roger Daltrey shooting the shit with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin that was filmed in 2002.

Plant was aboard The Who’s North American Tour in the summer of 2002 as the opening act. This clip shows Robert conversing about all sorts of things with Daltrey and they get so into their conversation that they lose track of time. At the end, Plant’s tour manager alerts him that he’s running late and we see Plant quickly jet the room backstage and head to the stage. Check it out…

The Show Must Go On: Drummer Scott Devours Saves The Who’s Quadrophenia Concert in San Diego

Written by on 02.06.2013 | News, Scott Devours, The Who

What is it about California that leads The Who to need to recruit drummers named Scott to save their shows? You may recall that back in 1973 The Who were famously forced to use a young drummer pulled from the crowd named Scott Halpin at the Cow Palace in Daly City after Keith Moon was “incapacitated.” Well last night in San Diego The Who were forced to call upon the services of drummer Scott Devours for the latest show of their Quadrophenia and More Tour when current drummer Zak Starkey was unable to perform due to a tendon issue.

Who fans that were in attendance last night are raving about Devours’ work at the View Valley Casino Center and from the looks of the videos it’s clear Scott did a fantastic job. Unbelievably, Devours only had one run through of the complex material before showtime and none for the “greatest hits” encore. Devours did have experience performing the songs of The Who as the drummer in Roger Daltrey’s solo band, but not with the majority of the Quadrophenia material. The Who were lucky Starkey was unable to play a Southern California area gig as Devours lives in nearby Long Beach. “Quadrophenia’s not an easy piece,” said Roger Daltrey on The Who’s website. “To do what Scotty did took real guts.”

The Who member Simon Townshend weighed in on Devours’ performance…

Amazing gig in San Diego. Hats off to drummer Scott Devours who stepped in for Zak… Having only one Quad run thru, he was faultless. Legend

The Who are supposed to play JOBING.COM Arena in Phoenix tonight. No word yet on which drummer will perform with the band.

Take a look at a few videos of Devours crushing it with The Who…

Full Show Friday: The Who @ Bridge School Benefits ’99

Written by on 02.01.2013 | Full Show Friday, The Who, Videos

In 1999, a few years before we lost bassist John “Ox” Entwistle, Neil and Pegi Young called upon The Who to perform at the annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts at Shoreline Amphitheatre. The shows took place on October 30 and 31st with The Who performing nearly identical sets each night. While The Who went unplugged for the gigs, in keeping with the Bridge School concerts tradition, we love that Ox utilized a heavy fuzz tone on his acoustic bass giving the performances an edge.

Professionally-shot footage of the entire Who set from October 30th as well as the beginning of the 31st has surfaced on TheWhoHD YouTube channel, so we thought a playlist of these vids would make a fantastic Full Show Friday post. See if you agree…

The Who’s First Full Show of 2012 Ends In Controversy

Written by on 11.02.2012 | News, Setlists, The Who

Last night The Who kicked off their Quadrophenia Tour at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida and it did not end happily. For their main set, The Who performed their landmark 1973 album Quadrophenia in its entirety followed by a five-song tour of the band’s greatest hits as an encore. Guitarist Pete Townshend, apparently unhappy with the stage volume, walked off during You Better You Bet, the next to last song, and left his band mates to finish the show without him.

According to Boca Mag, there was more drama than what took place during the encore, “Throughout the evening, Townshend gestured and, at times, fumed at his off-stage crew due to sound issues and problems with his guitars.” Hopefully yesterday’s issues aren’t a harbinger of what’s to come over the course of the 36-city tour.

Setlist:

Set: I Am The Sea, The Real Me, Quadrophenia, Cut My Hair, The Punk and the Godfather, I’m One, The Dirty Jobs, Helpless Dancer, Is It In My Head?, I’ve Had Enough, 5:15, Sea and Sand, Drowned,  Bell Boy, Doctor Jimmy, The Rock, Love Reign O’er Me

Encore: Pinball Wizard, Behind Blue Eyes, Who Are You?, You Better You Bet, Baba O’Riley

Both Keith Moon and John Entwistle were featured in the performance despite passing away in 1978 and 2002 respectively. WPTV tells us that video of an Entwistle bass solo was shown during 5:15 and Moon sang Bell Boy via video. From the looks of this clip, The Who spared no expense with the stage design for this tour. We just wish Roger Daltrey would keep his shirt on.

Written by on 09.21.2012 | Full Show Friday, The Who

For today’s Full Show Friday post not only do we have a video containing a complete concert, but we’ve also got news to go along with it. The focus of today’s post is a heavily-bootlegged performance by The Who that took place at The Summit in Houston on November 20, 1975. While researching this article we came across news that we missed – Eagle Rock Entertainment have slapped a fresh coat of aural and visual paint on the master recordings and will release the show on DVD and Blu-ray on October 9th as The Who: Live in Texas ’75.

The Who’s near two-hour performance features many of the finest songs in the band’s catalog including Drowned, Squeeze Box, Behind Blue Eyes, We’re Not Gonna Take It, Pinball Wizard, My Generation and Won’t Get Fooled Again. A true “all killer, no filler” affair, The Who made the first major rock concert held at Houston’s Summit one that we’re still talking about nearly 40 years later. While we wait for the newly remastered version that has been cleaned up by Who guru Jon Astley, let’s look at the already-incredible footage that has circulated in bootleg circles for a long time…

The Who – Live at the Houston Summit

Best of The B List: 10 Shows Played One Man Down

[Originally Published: July 22, 2010]

The phrase “the show must go on” originally referred to Broadway and show biz, but the cliché also rings true with live music. Considering we’re talking about rock stars playing demanding, high-energy music it’s no surprise that a number of instances of bands playing one man short have come up over the years. It’s actually more of a surprise that it doesn’t happen more often.

For this week’s B List we look at ten cases where acts we cover have performed without the services of one member. Some gigs were train wrecks while others wound up being great shows. Here’s what we came up with…

1. moe. – 07/09/2010 – Minus Al Schnier

This gig was the impetus for this list as Al Schnier was unable to perform at a recent moe. gig in Peoria, but his band mates went ahead with the show and delivered a solid performance heavy on Chuck and Rob songs. moe. offered fans refunds, but we bet there weren’t many takers.

Set One: Bullet> Awesome Gary> Billy Goat> Timmy Tucker> Zed Nought Z, Buster
Set Two: Captain America> Blue Jeans Pizza> Sensory Deprivation Bank, McBain, All Roads Lead to Home, St. Augustine, Don’t Fuck With Flo> Plane Crash
Encore: Stranger Than Fiction

Bloggy Goodness: DMB’s Caravan, Take 2

This weekend, the Dave Matthews Band will return to New York City with their traveling multi-day festival – Caravan – after Hurricane Irene forced the postponement of its final two days several weeks back. Moving just a bit north up the East River from Governor’s Island to Randall’s Island, the fest will retain its three-day format, where the DMB will be joined by the likes of Dispatch, who will play on Friday and Saturday nights, Warren Haynes, who will perform a special solo set, and vintage jam act From Good Homes. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds will also play a special Sunday afternoon set.

Photobucket

Tickets for Dave Matthews Caravan are currently on-sale, while those who are still holding onto their tickets for the originally scheduled dates should consult the exchange page for more information on attending.

Finally, with Jeremy Piven officially out of work now that HBO’s Entourage officially coming to an end after eight season this past weekend, the actor has put it out there that he wants to play the late Keith Moon, the enigmatic drummer for The Who.  Piven, who once guested with HT faves Umphrey’s McGee on percussion back in 2004, mentioned his interest in playing Moon The Loon in an interview with Fox News last month. While we’d love see Piven channel Ari Gold and Droz Andrews into the role, we hate to burst his bubble, but Roger Daltrey is already producing a biopic on his former band mate called See Me Feel Me: Keith Moon Naked For Your Pleasure, which is set to be released in 2012 and will star Mike Myers in the role.

Intermezzo: Return of Creem to Print

Written by on 07.13.2011 | Creem, Intermezzo, Magazines, The Who

Back in the ’70s Creem Magazine was at the forefront of the rock music criticism renaissance with esteemed writers Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, Greil Marcus and Cameron Crowe among its contributors. The print edition of the magazine ceased publication in the late ’80s and an online edition – launched in 2001 – hasn’t gained much traction. Despite the hard times endured by the magazine industry of late, a group of investors and the team that currently runs the online version have revealed that Creem will return to its roots as a print mag later this year.

According to an article on Today’s website, the team behind Creem “envision the quarterly publication as part of a broader music network that includes mobile apps and streaming music videos — all with the aim of attracting old and new readers.” Creem would be launched as a limited-edition rag with 150,000 to 200,000 editions printed each quarter. We look forward to seeing the return of Creem and will keep you posted on future announcements about the launch date.

While we wait, here’s six lovely links to get you over the hump…

Finally, Pete Townshend of The Who was so impressed by The Kinks after performing with them in Chicago back in 1969 that he fired off a letter raving about the gig and having some super kind words for Ray Davies and his band. That note, penned on Holiday Inn stationary from The Who’s next stop in Columbus, has surfaced all these years later. Check it out.

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Live At Leeds & Hull

Written by on 12.13.2010 | Pullin' Tubes, The Who

You’re bound to find The Who’s Live At Leeds album sitting comfortably towards the top of most best live albums of all-time lists. Recorded at the University of Leeds on February 14, 1970, during arguably the height of the band’s prowess, the gig featured a set of Who classics followed by a full run-through of their seminal rock opera Tommy – which had been released less than a year prior. The original Live at Leeds LP included just six selections from the show, while the 1995 reissue bumped the total to 14 songs before the entire performance was included on the 2001 release.

Last month, The Who released the definitive version of Live At Leeds through the impressive 6-disc Super Deluxe Edition. This latest and most comprehensive release includes not only the entire Leeds show, but also features their gig from next night at Hull City Hall – which the band thought was a better show and originally wanted to release. The Hull gig was initially thought to be unusable because the original recording was missing the bass track from the first four songs, but it was recently discovered that the bass tracks were there for the rest of the show. Thanks to modern technology, the bass parts were lifted from the Leeds show and patched in for the missing tracks from Hull for this release.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary, The Who have created this animated video for the live version of Tattoo…

Hors d’Oeuvres: The Who in 2011

Written by on 10.04.2010 | Hors d'Oeuvres, The Who

Visitors to The Who’s official website will find an audio interview with front man Roger Daltrey in which the founding member of the band reveals that the group plans to hit the road next year. Details of the jaunt are still in the planning stages with Daltrey saying, “we are planning on doing something. I can’t really talk about specifics yet, but it will be based around a past work. I would like to be on the road playing as many different kind of shows as we could: maybe doing ‘Quadrophenia’ one night, do greatest hits the next night … This is what I would like to do. And ‘Tommy’ … if I could still sing ‘Tommy’. That, to me, would be really good fun. And don’t keep going out with the same show every night — the audience would have to take a chance on what show they actually got.”

Let’s take a look at some other stories of note…

Finally, Jeff Miers of the Buffalo News examines the impact of free shows on the rest of Upstate NY’s live music calendar this summer. Upstate has an unusual situation with so many free concert series featuring high-profile acts. Read Miers’ piece to find out why these series are cannibalizing each other’s audiences not to mention ticketed shows.

Tour Dates: Freaks Ball

If you’re looking to get a little freaky this fall you’re in luck as psychedelic art-pop acts of Montreal and Janelle Monae will join forces for a 25-date tour that will kick off with a two-night stand at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on September 13. The two eclectic Atlanta-based acts seem to have forged quite the friendship, as they each guest on each others’ albums – Kevin Barnes & Co. appear on one track of Monae’s critically acclaimed LP The ArchAndroid, while Janelle will lend her talents to two songs on of Montreal’s forthcoming effort False Priest, which hits stores on Sept. 14.

If you’re not into a night which is sure to provide some fantastic people watching, then maybe you’ll be interested in hitting one these recently announced tours..

Finally, despite their high profile appearance at the Super Bowl in January, it has been almost four years since The Who have been out for a full tour. That will change in 2011 as the venerable classic rock act are eying up a return to the road in the spring of next year with a new show that according to Billboard may include a retooled stage presentation of their 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, which the band recently performed at a benefit in March and last toured with 14 years ago.

Cover Wars: Baby Don’t You Do It Edition

Last week, our guest Cover Wars author Andy Kahn mentioned that many people incorrectly think that Jeff Buckley penned Hallelujah when in fact it is the work of Leonard Cohen. Similarly this week, I’m sure there are a large number of people who think The Band wrote Don’t Do It when in fact it was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1964. Alright, I’ll admit it – I was one of those people until somewhat recently. This song was written by the legendary songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, more on them later.

The Contestants:

The Band released this under the name of simply Don’t Do It, not exactly sure why they dropped the “Baby Don’t You”, maybe one of our readers knows. This was first released on the live album Rock of Ages which was recorded during the last four days of 1971. Don’t Do it was also on the live release The Last Waltz recorded in 1976. A studio version was released by way of a bonus track for the 2000 Deluxe Edition of Cahoots, an album by The Band from 1971. Source: Rock Of Ages

Tour Dates: Who Are You?

Written by on 12.22.2009 | Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Tour Dates

If your name is Roger Daltrey or Pete Townshend, it’s looking like 2010 is going to be a heck of year for you. As we previously reported, The Who will serve as the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, FL on February 7. Then, come March, the seminal classic rock act will be honored via a tribute concert at New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

teaser3

The concert, the sixth in the series presented by Knitting Factory founder/City Winery owner Michael Dorf, will feature the likes of Warren Haynes, Frank Black and Living Colour with proceeds to benefit the American Symphony Orchestra Music Notes, Church Street School for Music and Art, Young Audiences, Music Unites All-Youth Choir, the Pinwheel Project and FIKS (Fixing Instruments for Kids in Schools).

If you can’t make it to Carnagie Hall for what should be a great night of music, than maybe you’ll be able to hit one these recently announced tours…

Finally, an all-star roster of guitar-slingers will come together to celebrate the music of Jimi Hendrix via the Experience Hendrix Tour next Spring. The 17-date, cross-country tour will be anchored by Billy Cox of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band Of Gypsys, Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang and Eric Johnson. While select dates will see Cesar Rosas & David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Sacred Steel featuring Robert Randolph and Susan Tedeschi joining the bill.
