Phil Lesh Visits TRI Studios For Memorable Weir Here

Phil Lesh made his first appearance on Bob Weir’s Weir Here talk show one to remember last night at TRI Studios. Lesh emerged halfway through a version of Sugar Magnolia featuring Weir on acoustic guitar that kicked off the show and stuck around for nearly an hour and a half of the two hour show before departing for his own venue.

Following Sugar Magnolia, the Grateful Dead / Furthur band mates offered impressive duo versions of Cosmic Charlie and Loose Lucy before bringing out multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby for a passionate take on Jack Straw. Then, Weir headed over to his desk, which is the same style as other talk show hosts like Jay Leno and David Letterman, where he was joined by Lesh, Grateful Dead roadie Steve Parish and the Dead’s legacy manager David Lemieux for an incredibly engaging storytelling session about the late Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. It’s not often we get to see Weir and Lesh just trading tales and they both seemed to hold nothing back frankly discussing drug and alcohol usage.

Video: Weir Here – Bob Weir, Sammy Hagar, Lukas Nelson, Jerry Harrison, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester

Bob Weir continued his Weir Here performance / Q&A series last night via a live webcast originating from his TRI Studios facility in the Bay Area last night. For this ninth installment of Weir Here, the Furthur / Grateful Dead guitarist was joined by a cast of characters that included Talking Heads / Modern Lovers  keyboardist/guitarist Jerry Harrison, former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar, singer/songwriter Lukas Nelson and RatDog rhythm section Robin Sylvester and Jay Lane.

Hagar, Weir’s longtime friend and neighbor, started things off by fronting the assembled musicians on Loose Lucy and Mustang Sally and backed up Nelson on JJ Cale’s Call Me The Breeze. Lukas then offered up his novelty song I’m Stuck with a Boner on a Bus Full of Guys before giving way to Harrison for a rollicking version of Life During Wartime. Bobby and Lukas shared lead vocals on a cover of Come Together by The Beatles which was followed the a pair of GD classics – Friend of the Devil and Althea. The group then tipped its cap to the other legendary act Harrison was a part of – Modern Lovers – by tackling She Cracked. For the finale, Weir led the ensemble through I Know You Rider.

Webcast Tonight: Bob Weir, Sammy Hagar, Jonathan Wilson, Jeff Chimenti and The Mooncusers at Sweetwater Music Hall

Earlier this week we mentioned a wounded veterans benefit happening tonight at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif. that caught our attention. CNBC senior economics reporter Steve Liesman and his band The Mooncusers are set to perform this evening aided by a cast of special guests that include Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir, psych-folkie Jonathan Wilson, rocker Sammy Hagar and Furthur keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Well we just found out that the show will be webcast live via Yahoo! Music and TRI Studios starting at 9PM PT / 12AM ET.

[Weir and Liesman Jam Session]

Bobby and Steve Liesman met years ago backstage at a Dead show and renewed their friendship after the reporter profiled the guitarists for a pair of CNBC profiles. Hagar and Weir are longtime friends and neighbors who have jammed plenty of times over the year, while Wilson entered the Dead extended family thanks to a spotlight-stealing turn at the Move Me Brightly webcast this past August and impressive sit-ins with Furthur earlier this month. Don’t forget the show is a benefit and that all proceeds benefit the Coming Home Project.

Setlist and “Photos” – God Street Wine w. Bob Weir @ TRI Studios

Tonight was a surreal evening for God Street Wine fans as the band returned after a 19-month layoff to play the first of six shows marking their latest reunion: a free webcast originating from Bob Weir’s TRI Studios. The HT faves performed their 1994 album $1.99 Romances in its entirety and jammed with their host on a batch of covers as well as one of their own tunes.

[Screenshots of Tri Studios Webcast]

When the band took the stage with Princess Henrietta followed by Mile By Mile and Nightingale, a pattern started to emerge. As Thirsty came next it was clear God Street Wine was replicating the track list of their major label debut – $1.99 Romances. GSW tackled their most well-known album song-by-song until they had played the entire 14-track LP. While most tunes were performed in a similar fashion to the album, guitarist Lo Faber strapped on an acoustic for a slow-tempo take on Molly. Also, one-time GSW member Jason Crosby, who joined his old mates for the whole show, played fiddle and dueled with Faber during Wendy.

Set: Princess Henrietta, Mile By Mile, Nightingale, Thirsty, Stone House, Molly, The Ballroom, Run To You, Crazy Head, Hammer & A Spike, Wendy, Imogene, Tina’s Town, Into The Sea, Candyman*, Feel Like A Stranger*, Cassidy*, And It Stoned Me^, Epilog*

* – w/ Bob Weir
^ – w/ Bob Weir and Shanna Morrison

Faber strode to the mic after $1.99 Romances and welcomed TRI proprietor Bob Weir. Weir, who had jammed with God Street Wine on Jam Cruise, led the group through Grateful Dead classics Candyman, Feel Like A Stranger and Cassidy. For a finale, Weir stuck around while vocalist Shanna Morrison came out for a cover of her father’s (Van Morrison) And It Stoned Me. When urged by their host for just one more, God Street Wine complied with their own Epilog. GSW heads over to Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley for shows on Friday and Saturday.

Setlist and “Photos” – Move Me Brightly: Bob Weir, Mike Gordon, Joe Russo, Donna Jean, Phil Lesh and More Salute Jerry

Bob Weir assembled a formidable roster of musicians to honor Jerry Garcia for a webcast dubbed Move Me Brightly that originated from the Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist’s TRI Studios. The broadcast started at 6:30 PM local time with a fantastic 30-minute documentary put together by Justin Kreutzmann. Kreutzmann’s piece, hosted by actor Luke Wilson, included Garcia remembrances from Bill Kreutzmann, Santana, Dave Schools, Keller Williams, Stephen Perkins, Perry Farrell, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Mike Campbell, Mickey Hart and David Hidalgo as well as a cameo from Sammy Hagar.

[All Screengrabs From tristudios.com Webcast]

The music started with a surprise appearance from Phil Lesh, who later played a gig with Yonder Mountain String Band at his Terrapin Crossroads venue. Lesh teamed up with Grateful Dead band mates Weir and Donna Jean Godchaux as well as Cardinals’ Neal Casal and Jon Graboff, Jason Roberts (Norah Jones, The Candles), Furthur drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti for a beautiful The Wheel and raucous Cumberland Blues. From there musicians shuffled in and out throughout the set, with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale, Black Crowes keyboardist Adam McDougall, Harper (Son of Paul) Simon, Yellowbirds’ Josh Kaufman and Sam Cohen, psych-folkie Jonathan Wilson, Bay Area singer-songwriter Cass McCombs, Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson and Hold Steady members Craig Finn and Tad Kubler among those participating in the lengthy set.

Weir sang lead vocals on many of the songs, with standouts from the other singers coming from Mike Gordon on Tennessee Jed, Neal Casal on Ship of Fools, Cass McCombs on Dupree’s Diamond Blues and Jonathan Wilson on Mission In The Rain. Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench didn’t perform “due to unforeseen circumstances” leaving Chimenti plenty of stage time. The rhythm section of Mike Gordon and Joe Russo also handled their respective duties for the majority of the webcast. Four hours after the music started the show came to a peak with a Franklin’s Tower, U.S. Blues and Goin’ Down The Road segment that featured many of the evening’s musicians. A tender Ripple brought Move Me Brightly to a close at the five-hour mark.

Here’s the setlist as well as which musicians performed on each tune…
