The Band – Baby Don’t You Do It (Marvin Gaye)

The Band released this under the name of simply Don’t Do It, not exactly sure why they dropped the “Baby Don’t You”, maybe one of our readers knows. This was first released on the live album Rock of Ages which was recorded during the last four days of 1971. Don’t Do it was also on the live release The Last Waltz recorded in 1976. A studio version was released by way of a bonus track for the 2000 Deluxe Edition of Cahoots, an album by The Band from 1971. Source: Rock Of Ages

Happy Thanksgiving. The encore from The Last Waltz:

Matchup #3:

My Morning Jacket – It Makes No Difference (The Band)

My Morning Jacket had the pleasure of recording It Makes No Difference for the 2007 compilation Endless Highway: The Music Of The Band at Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock, NY. In 2006, prior to the release of Endless Highway, My Morning Jacket frequently covered the song in concert including their Bonnaroo festival set as well as in opening slots for Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder frequently came out to trade verses with MMJ lead vocalist Jim James.

Gov’t Mule – War Pigs (by Black Sabbath)

So, as I mentioned in the intro, 17-year-old DaveO saw Gov’t Mule destroy this tune. That concert was without a doubt a major influence during these formative musical years for me. I went out and immediately bought Mule’s Live…With A Little Help From Our Friends CD. Writing this piece and looking up the entry for War Pigs on MULEbase.com, I was surprised to see that the performance I saw in Boston was just the third time it had been played.

Matchup #4:

Trey Anastasio – Row Jimmy (Grateful Dead)

The debut gig for “The Trio” featuring Trey Anastasio, Tony Markellis and Russ Lawton took place on February 15th, 1999 at the Higher Ground in Winooski, VT. The performance saw the debut of Row Jimmy and was a benefit for Very Special Arts Vermont. Two months later, Trey performed the song with Phil Lesh & Friends at The Warfield in San Francisco. When The Trio hit the road in May for a full tour, Row Jimmy made two more appearances and has since disappeared from Trey’s live repertoire. Trey has played Row Jimmy with Phil Lesh at least one more time: at the Vegoose festival in 2006, and it was not good. Source: 05/04/1999

She & Him – I Put A Spell On You (Screamin’ Jay Hawkins)

Though not recorded on either of their studio albums, She & Him (which features Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) frequently covers the song in concert. An impressive vocal performance.

This video is from Conan O’Brien:

Voting ends on Tuesday morning at midnight EDT.

  1. How did Umph not make it here. I boycott this. Also I agree about punching a baby is She and Him win.

  2. As terrible as the cover of ramble on in AC was at least it was improvised and they took a risk. If you were in AC you could tell it was a total bustout on the fly. Phish has a problem if they take a risk and fail people bitch if they play it close to the vest people bitch. Stop judging every note well except in this game. The band to win it all.

  3. Joshua,

The bracket all starts with covers that win a Cover Wars [multiple artists all covering the same song] throughout the year, decided by reader voting.

And then the winners of those individual contests are put up against each other in the March Madness.

So that’s how we got to the Elite 8. Though it is all done by reader voting, I can’t agree with your assessment that the covers from Jeff Buckley, The Band, Gov’t Mule or My Morning Jacket are anything close to “so-so” but rather some of the best we’ve had all year. . .
