Cover Wars: The Wicked Messenger Edition

Faces: I was driving this weekend and queued up the first Faces album and this killer rendition came on, that is what inspired this week’s Cover Wars. I think that Ian McLagan’s organ work is what really puts this rendition over the top, obviously having Rod Stewart vox and Ronnie Wood on guitar helps too. Source: First Step

Legion of Marry: This 13+ minute rendition, which was a bonus track on this official Legion of Mary release, suffers from seriously low vocal levels, but there is some great playing from all members of this ensemble. Garcia’s vocal mic gets some extra juice for the third verse. Also of note, Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dead played this song together only once, July 12th, 1987. Patti Smith: The Godmother of Punk returns to Cover Wars, last seen in November’s Everybody Wants To Rule The World Edition. Pretty sure Patti channels Dylan for some of her vocal delivery in the first verse. Source: Gone Again

Phil Lesh & Friends: I’ll admit, glancing at the setlist – at first I figured that Chris Robinson sang lead on this. And then I gave it a listen and I hear Phil’s voice sound out the first verse – and you know what? It’s really good. As far as Phil vocal performances, top notch. Funky arrangement too. Tim O’Brien: I’ve got my friend Holly to thank for turning me onto this disc, back in the days when music piracy still involved burning CD’s and the US Postal Service. The album is all Bob Dylan covers, must hear tracks include: Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power) and Lay Down Your Weary Tune. Really the whole disc is top notch. Source: Red On Blonde
