Cover Wars: Them Changes Edition

Addison Groove Project: The first of our bands with horns, this recording comes from one of the last shows that AGP played together. Tracks from the following night have also been featured in the Doobie Brothers and Frankenstein editions. Source: 3-1-2007

The Bridge: Fresh off their shared victory from two weeks ago, The Bridge again throw down a high-energy romp through this week’s selection. Source: 7-19-2006

Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood: Clapton & Winwood played three shows at Madison Square Garden in 2008 and rocked Them Changes each night. On the first night of the run, a friend called Buddy Miles from the show during the performance while Miles was ill. He would pass away just one day later. Source: 2-25-2008 & Part II

Video from a couple days later, complete with a dedication to Buddy:

Oysterhead: When Oysterhead played Oregon in 2001, Trey came out for the encore and announced they would be playing a song off of “the best guitar album of all time”. Sure, Trey has probably said this about a couple of other albums as well (he’s certainly named multiple venues his favorite place to play), but it’s still a pretty strong statement coming from one of guitarists out there that best channels Jimi. PBS: PBS brings something unique to the table – vocal harmonies. I’m not sure if they just felt like adding them, or if they come from another cover I’m not familiar with – but every version I’ve heard has a lead singer and that’s it. So the tight vocals are a refreshing change to their interpretation of the tune, and as we also heard in Spanish Castle Magic, Brian Stoltz can really rip Hendrix-style. PBS has just finished a run of four shows with Page McConnell that will be available at livedownloads.com shortly. Source: 7-20-2007

Some video from a version from August ’07:

Phish: I think it’s OK to include both Phish & Oysterhead this week because we’ve got different Phish members handling the vocals and Mike Gordon/Jon Fishman are quite different than Les Claypool/Stewart Copeland. This one-off performance of the tune took place during the encore of night three at the Worcester Centrum. This was about a year after Buddy Miles and Merl Saunders joined Phish onstage at Madison Square Garden for a version of All Along The Wachtower (imagine how long THAT Cover Wars would be). Source: When I asked SGordo for a recording of Them Changes, he sent me three. I’m using the Schoeps source, but I don’t have a link for you. A recording is up on that Phish spreadsheet, but it’s got no source info. Download that mystery source here

RAQ: The intro to this one may seem a little odd, but you need to hear the track before it to hear the segue in its entirety, as this did not start from silence. Check out the rest of the show for a bunch of other covers by artists such as Pink Floyd, Billy Cobham & Van Halen. Source: 4-7-2007

Rose Hill Drive: On 12-30-2006, Rose Hill Drive treated their hometown crowd in Boulder to Band Of Gypsies covered in its entirety. Just recently the band again performed the album three separate times during a tour of the United Kingdom. For New Year’s this year they’ll be covering Led Zeppelin II. Source: 12-30-2006
