Exclusive Audio: Trey Anastasio – Pigtail
Last month we shared our review of Scabbard, the first single from Trey Anastasio’s forthcoming Traveler album, due October 16th on ATO Records. The song marks a major evolution for the Phish front man and will be released as a 7″ inch vinyl single tomorrow. What will be on the flip side of the single? Glad you asked, it’s an Anastasio/Marshall tune called Pigtail.

Pigtail was debuted by Phish at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. on December 28, 2010 and has yet to be performed again by the quartet. However, Pigtail resurfaced as part of Anastasio’s solo repertoire last fall and was recorded for the Peter Katis-produced Traveler LP. Katis once again fulfills Trey’s goal of using the studio as an instrument by layering vintage keys, guitar wails and other effects behind Big Red’s potent vocal delivery.
But don’t take our word for it, listen for yourself as we present the internet premiere of Pigtail…

Trey Anastasio – Pigtail

I really hope Katis gets to work with Phish on the next album. If “Scabbard” and “Pigtail” are any indication, he’s the producer Phish has been waiting to work with.
Imagine what they could do with “Steam” in the studio with his help.
I liked it but b/t this and Let me Lie I’m a little disappointed (personally) – I was hoping the entire record would have the vibe that Scabbard does and be more on the cinematic side than the poppy – these two point towards the latter. Excited to hear the rest thought and Scabbard itself is a great surprise coming off Shine and Bar 17…
Gotta agree with Phortin 100% on this one… After hearing both “Scabbard” and “Pigtail”… I’d love to hear them leverage Katis on the album. I’d also love to hear a slow and slinky Steam at Dicks next weekend!
Not bad but a sounds too Shine/Bar 17 like; neither of which I was a fan of.
Understandably so (with Trey’s recovery) but the whole “conscious again” reminds of Dylan’s “Christian stage” in the early 80s.
With that said, I am happy Trey is putting out new music on regular basis!
Noooooooooooooooooo! I heard phish play this in 2011 and was really hoping it would be on their album. The harmonies were awesome! Oh well the Stones said it best. But still a great song thanks Trey and Tom!
loved trey and the band
the drums sound like a drum machine not a real person. This album will not be purchased by me.
Love it, sounds full– and although it sounded stiff when Phish played it, I prefer that Phish does it. That said, would love to hear more horns initially in the beginning and wtf happened to that nice little guitar lick Trey did that’s replaced by the cheesy keyboard?
