As the summer winds down, word of fall events are showing up in my inbox. I received an email the other day from veteran NYC food competitor Theodore Peck who most recently hosted the Brooklyn Beer Experiment. His latest food-related contest is The Brooklyn CHEESE Experiment.

It is taking place at The Bell House in Brooklyn on September 13th. According to Theodore’s email, they (Theodore and Nick Suarez) still need a few amateur chefs to come on board. Top prize is a $600 ticket to the Murray’s Cheese Boot Camp….Indulge your inner chef and sign up. Part of the proceeds go to Ovarian Cancer research and if the Brooklyn Beer Experiment was a barometer, this should be one heck of a good time.

Also in my inbox today was an email from an old high school friend to let me know that there is a new show airing on Spike starting on August 28th at midnight. It is called Men-U.

According to their press release: MEN-U is a reality cooking show that features four regular New Jersey guys, one of whom happens to be a professional chef along with Brian McCarthy who serves up booze and bawdy laughs. The show is all about having some fun, looking at hot chicks and maybe learning a thing or two about cooking.

The one of the four regular New Jersey guys who is a chef is named Doug Katz.  Doug and I went to high school together and this show should be a lot of fun.  If you are around Friday night, check it out.  It starts at Midnight on August 28th (Friday).

The 3rd thing for this week is the nightly Blue Plate Special at The Mermaid Inn on the West Side (87th/Amsterdam).  It is a lobster roll on a brioche bun, old bay fries and a beer.  It is served until 7 PM nightly. This week’s beer was Belfast Lobster Ale.  At $20 this is a great bargain and a damn good lobster roll.

That is all for this week, things are still slow in NYC as we are winding down the summer.  I will be out of town next week as I am going up to the Berkshires for Labor Day weekend.  We will be back full throttle with the news from the foodie-verse as well as highlights from the twitter feed once I get back from vacation.

Have a great Labor Day everyone!!!
