After a prolonged lockout that looked like it was never going to end, the National Football League kicked off their season last night with quite the thrilling shootout as the defending Super Bowl champions the Green Bay Packers beat the New Orleans Saints, 42 to 34.  So with that in mind, I thought we’d dedicate this week’s Mix Tape to the return of football dominating our Sundays for the next six-plus months. While there are plenty of tunes about our National Pastime, it’s a bit trickier coming up with six pigskin-related songs, but I think I did an admirable job. So sit back, enjoy and play it loud!

We kick things off with Jack Johnson’s ode to the backyard pick up games of our youth with Mudfootball from his debut album Brushfire Fairytales. From there, we’ve Fountains Of Wayne’s All Kinds Of Time, a tune all about the pressure and decision making that goes into playing quarterback, from their Welcome Interstate Managers record. Then, out of left field, comes the oddball selection of the bunch, with  Football Fight from Queen’s soundtrack to Flash Gordon.

From there, it’s Explosions In The Sky, who composed the soundtrack to the film adaptation of Friday Nights Lights, along with contributing music the television show, with First Breath After Coma. We follow that up with old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, who gives us Monday Morning Quarterback, a song more about a failed relationship than the actual game of football. Finally, we close things out with Hank Williams Jr.’s All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight, the song that was transformed into the theme song for Monday Night Football, which arguably may be one of the most recognizable ones on television ever.
