FMT: ‘Tis The Season 2 – Indie-Rock XMas

Last week, Ryan kicked off the holiday season with his ‘Tis The Season mix, which featured a mixed bag of tunes to get you in the spirit of things. Maybe it was the first sight of snowflakes in New York City earlier this week, the smell of all the pine trees for sale on the street corners around town or all of those holiday decorations, but I thought we’d continue on the theme from last week. For this week’s mix tape, we’ve got six indie-rock Christmas tunes for your listening pleasure. So sit back, enjoy and play it loud…

We start things off with Deer Tick and their punk-y garage and surf rock ode to the season – Christmas All Summer Long – from their recently released digital single Holy Sh*t, It’s Christmas. From there, we’ve got Bright Eyes doing his best impression of The King with Blue Christmas from the compilation album Maybe This Christmas. Next up, is The Strokes front man Julian Casablancas with his earnest cover of SNL’s I Wish It Was Christmas Today, which came as a bonus track on his solo debut Phrazes For The Young.

We follow that up with The Walkmen and perhaps my favorite tune of this mix – Christmas Party, which was included on a limited edition 7” vinyl EP. Then we’ve got Portland’s own psychedelic folk-rockers Blitzen Trapper with Christmas Is Coming Soon that can be found on the 2008 Pacific Northwest artist heavy Christmas comp album I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas. Finally, we close things out with the mighty My Morning Jacket and the bluesy, Southern rock take on Santa Claus Is Back In Town from their six-song EP filled with Christmas songs, Does Xmas Fiasco Style.
