Friday 4 the Foodies: Hot Jumbo Bagels

Well, since we started a debate recently about the best sloppy joe, I figured it was time to talk about my favorite NYC bagel store and favorite thing to get when I go.  My favorite bagel store in NYC is Hot Jumbo Bagels on the east side of the street on 2nd avenue between 57th & 56th Streets.

As the sign says, they have been open since 1977. Besides having bagels always coming out fresh and hot (just ask them, they will tell you which are the freshest) in the normal flavors you find everywhere else they have a type of bagel called The Black Russian bagel.  It is basically a much darker pumpernickel bagel with sesame seeds. The sandwich I get from them is Black Russian bagel, scallion cream cheese and sliced lox.  At $7.50 it’s a steal in my opinion.  Got one just 2 days ago, here it is:

What are some of your favorite bagel places and sandwiches?  One other one of mine is:

H&H Bagels Midtown East
1551 2nd Ave
(between 80th St & 81st St)
212.717.7312

Get any of their bagels but make sure to try the smoked tuna salad on a bagel, trust me on this one. See ya next Friday.

  2. BOOOO! Avoid this place.

I had always avoided this place because it resembles a tourist spot with its sign. My instincts were confirmed when I tried this place at lunch today. All of your Foodies entries have looked like really good places and this spot was by my work and I decided to try it today.

I went with my fallback, the everything bagel with egg salad and muenster cheese. My first issue is with the amount of cheese and egg salad they put on. I was going to let it slide that I was being helped by a seemingly mentally handicapped individual who may have been on his first day. I can’t hold any of that against him… but his cohort, the older gentleman was as much to blame in this area. In NYC, it has been my experience that when you are being charged extra for cheese and they are taking the time to unwrap the big brick, that you are going to get anywhere from 2-6 slices of cheese on your sandwich. I was given 1 slice. Im sorry, 1 THIN slice. Basically, not worth the man’s time to unwrap it and waste more saran wrap covering it back up. The egg salad was about half an inch and it tasted like dry, bad-bodega egg salad. No flavor even for egg salad.

I will say the bagel wasn’t too bad. Not the best I’ve had by any means but not terrible either.

This was one of those meals that is so bad you want to go get it somewhere else. Not only because it was such a bad experience but you don’t wanna end on that terrible note. Let’s say for instance I was hit by a taxi on the way back to work. I would have been lying on the street thinking “man that egg salad bagel was bad. how am I gonna go out like that?”

ANYWAY, Let me suggest the Astoria Bagel Shop on Ditmars and 28th Street. For the same price, maybe a little cheaper, you get a much better bagel, about 6 thick slices of cheese and about an inch of egg salad. You need a fork when you are finished to eat all the stuff that fell off.
