Friday For the Foodies: Montreal, Part 1 – Schwartz’s Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen

When we got to Schwartz’s around 11:30 AM, the line was already pretty epic (they open at 8:00 AM on Saturdays).

Recently, Schwartz’s opened a mostly take out store called Chez Schwartz’s à Coté right next to the original.  It is the same people and same food but definitely not the same Schwartz’s experience.

The first thing you notice when you get near the door of Schwartz’s is the menu outside and the smoked meat inside the front window with the sign Smoked Fresh Daily.

After waiting around 30 minutes, we finally were ushered inside and on our way to smoked meat nirvana.  The interior probably hasn’t changed much in the last 83 years.  Your place mat is an advertisement for all that Schwartz’s has to offer.

We decided on getting 2 platters of meat, 1 medium fat, 1 lean, sides of fries and their signature black cherry soda.

You can get the meat just as a sandwich as well.  If you order the platter they give you a nice stack of rye bread to make your own sandwiches.  The fries were great in a cooked in a liquid vat of crack kinda way.  Wonder how often they change the fry oil, the flavor of the fries was funky old goodness.

If you happen to be in Montreal, going to Schwartz’s is a MUST!

The other great thing about the area where Schwartz’s is located is that there are a ton of ethnic European charcuteries, all worth stopping into and checking out.  Here are a few pictures of those neighboring stores:
