Friday Mix Tape: Sue Me, Sue You

Lawsuits and rock music have gone hand in hand since the genre started in the mid ’50s. The most recent big lawsuit in the music world comes courtesy of the “Contra Girl,” whom we now know is named Ann Kirsten Kennis. The former model has sued Vampire Weekend and the photographer who shot the cover of Contra for using her photo on the LP. In honor of Kennis the theme for this week’s Mix Tape is lawyers.

We bet you’re not surprised that we start things off with the best song ever written involving attorneys – Warren Zevon’s Lawyers, Guns & Money. Next comes Pavement with Sue Me, Jack off of Slanted and Enchanted. From there we bring you George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord from All Things Must Pass. Harrison was sued by the publishers of The Chiffons’ He’s So Fine for “subconsciously” copying the song. We move on to the Beach Boys’ Surfin’ USA – a tune that was the subject of a dispute between the group and Chuck Berry. Jackson Browne gives us Lawyers In Love before we bring things full circle with Vampire Weekend’s Cousins from Contra.
