Bassist Phil Lesh turned 71 yesterday and celebrated the occasion with his Furthur bandmates and about 2,100 of his fans at the Best Buy Theater in New York City last night. Attendees were treated to free cupcakes and two sets with Lesh’s musical fingerprints all over them.
Over the first eight shows of Furthur’s current tour, the band had been performing one song from The Beatles’ Abbey Road album each night. After a first set that included songs from nearly every era of the Grateful Dead’s 30 year career, a large chunk of last night’s second set focused on the Abbey Road medley. Guitarists Bob Weir and John Kadlecik split vocal duties with Lesh as the group tore through each segment.

Once Furthur finished the medley, only one song from Abbey Road remained to be played – Her Majesty. And as you might have guessed, Phil and Bobby’s band closed out the Best Buy run by tacking the tune onto its encore. Next up for Furthur is a show on Thursday in Fairfax, VA.

Fake Jerry rocked! Jed, Corrina and Mason’s were smokin’! Jam after Scarlet was amazing. And how about Janice Soprano on background vocals?!! If you have not dabbled in post-GD iterations I suggest checking this one out. Solid show.
