Furthur Debuts Push Comes To Shove at Terrapin Crossroads

Just a few days ago our friends over at Deadheadland were figuring out which songs that the Grateful Dead performed had never been played by the surviving band members’ post-Jerry bands. One of the few tunes that fit this distinction was the Hunter/Garcia track When Push Comes To Shove which was performed by the Dead from December ’86 to July ’89. However, after last night’s Furthur show at Terrapin Crossroads we can now remove When Push Comes To Shove from that list as the Phil Lesh / Bob Weir-led band finally debuted their version of it towards the end of the first set.

Furthur has taken up residence at the Phil Lesh-owned venue in preparation for their summer tour. Yesterday was guitarist John Kadlecik’s birthday and the show featured a few nods to the former Dark Star Orchestra axe man, who sang more than usual including on the debut of When Push Comes To Shove. A funny moment happened towards the end of the first set when Weir announced “we’ll be back in a little bit” before Lesh reminded him they had one song left.

My Brother Esau, which made its first post-Jerry appearance earlier this year, was played early in the second set showing that the Bob Weir / John Perry Barlow-penned tune may stick around for a while in the band’s repertoire. Also of note, Furthur covered Most of the Time by Bob Dylan with Kadlecik on violin and singer Jeff Pehrson helping out on acoustic guitar. A Not Fade Away encore came complete with the Terrapin Crossroads tradition of grilled cheese for all. The run continues tonight.

Here’s the setlist…
