Furthur @ Hammerstein: Night One Setlist
The Phil Lesh / Bob Weir-led Furthur kicked off a quick jaunt through the Tri-State Region last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City where they played the first of two shows at the venue.

The sextet tackled some of the more well-known material in the canon including Truckin’, Touch of Grey, The Other One and Scarlet > Fire. Furthur also took a stab at one of the more complex Dead tunes – King Solomon’s Marbles. For the band’s first few gigs, John Kadlecik didn’t sing all of the Jerry tunes and that was true again last night as Bobby either sang or shared lead vocals on Cosmic Charlie, He’s Gone, Touch of Grey, Days Between and Ramble On Rose. The former DSO “Jerry” did get to sing lead on Dire Wolf, Doin’ That Rag, Reuben and Cerise and Fire On The Mountain.

Awful venue. Period. Oversold and totally unbearable. The rhythm section sounded in the pocket, but to my ears, JK was far too restrained. Nice to hear Weir on R&C. Is the experience of the listener not important at all? Add this to various groups under Phil’s leadership which were under-rehearsed and just plain bad (see SOB’s a few years back) and one has to wonder if all the talk about being so dedicated to their fanbase has been nonsense? Get a good download. Forget the Hammerstein.
Gotta disagree…from the balcony the view and sound were great. A rare chance to see them in a small venue, playing great tunes from the canon and rarities. I thought John totally stepped up…he had the sound, and the licks, and could sing out when his turn came. The drums were too low to begin, but the balance got fixed. Sorry that bobby m didn’t enjoy it as much. Can’t wait for tonight!
Bob – Where were you sitting/standing? Hoping a good spot in the second mezz makes it a good experience tonight.
Sadly, I was downstairs- The balcony is always the best place to be in that room. I was turned off by the sradine like atmosphere in the space. I am glad that many had a great time and hope the best for all heading out this evening!
