Furthur: Setlists, Audio, Video and More
Two members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, launched their latest band, Furthur, with three shows at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA this past weekend that featured nearly every classic Dead song ever written.
Joining Phil and Bobby as part of Furthur were drummer extraordinaire “Sir” Joe Russo, guitarist John Kadlecik of quintessential Dead cover band the Dark Star Orchestra as well as Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti of RatDog.
You’d think Kadlecik – a guy who “plays” Jerry every night with his own band would sing all of Garcia’s parts, but Weir sang lead on a number of Jerry songs. Yet, the crowd would go nuts whenever Kadlecik stepped to the mic.

Bobby insisting on singing the Jerry songs destroys shows. I went to the Dead at the meadowlands this summer and Bobby singing Terrapin was painful. With Kadlecik there I would have thought he would come to his senses.
Newsflash Bobby: even with that beard you are not Jerry, stick to your role (which is important, and you’re the best at it) and everyone will be happy.
Dave — I feel the pain, too, but they actually let Kadlicek sing more Jerry parts than the other ringers have over the years. Weir didn’t insist on singing Bertha, Help, Terrapin, China, Scarlet, etc. as he did on the last Dead tour (depending on the show!). Phil and Bob, esp., have been singing a lot of the Garcia material with P&F/Ratdog/ TOO/The Dead for over a decade now and they clearly like doing it. Second, I think Bob and Phil don’t want to COMPLETELY go back in time. It’s a slippery slope. As awesome as it is to integrate JK — whose voice and guitar are SO close to “the real thing” that it’s spooky — it also risks invalidating the musical growth Bob and Phil have made in the 14 years since Jerry passed if they just revert back to 100% classic GD orchestration. Keeping some vox off JK’s plate or tag-teaming them Weir might be a very conscious decision to keep exploring and interpreting the repertoire (or maintaining ownership) rather than just cede it over to John. I think Bob and Phil like some of the new tools in their respective sheds all these years later even if the fans are all too happy to just let John take over ALL the Garcia songs. Phil wants to sing Franklins, Bobby wants to sing Birdsong — fact. They didn’t hand over 100% of the Jerry tunes to Rob, Joan, or Warren, either, and I don’t think they will do it w/ John despite his pedigree and approximations which is probably the hardest thing for people to accept (“smoke it if you’ve got it”). The other thing with John is that he is such a dead ringer that it might be too weird for Bob and Phil to just make him Jerry for everything too soon, you know? I’m not surprised that there were no classic tearjerker 2nd set ballads like Dew, Black Peter, Wharf Rat, Stella, China Doll, Comes A Time, Days Between, So Many Roads, etc. — it’s like, “be careful what you wish for…”!! People are ragging on Weir for playing with his back turned to John for portions of the shows, but maybe he likes what he’s hearing, but doesn’t –at least at this point in time –want to look that way too much because it is still too close/painful. Who fucking knows? Anyway, I agree that it is frustrating to have to listen to Bob sing “Sugaree” or share “Eyes” when Kadlicek is six feet away so I hear you loud and clear, but on a philosophical level I guess I understand and accept it. That said, don’t let Phil sing lead vocals too much! And for the most part, the trading verses gimmick is not working for me, either, unless it’s a round robin song like “The Weight.” Just give it to one guy and let him run with it.
