Furthur to Cover Dead Albums at Festival

Speaking of Furthur, the group has just announced that they will perform six classic Grateful Dead albums in their entirety over the course of the Furthur Festival on Memorial Day Weekend. On Saturday, Phil and Bobby’s band will tackle American Beauty as Set 1, Workingman’s Dead as Set 2 and Anthem of the Sun as Set 3. On Sunday, Furthur will rock Blues For Allah as Set 1, Axomoxoa as Set 2 and Terrapin Station as Set 3.

The other news about that the festival, that Jambands.com also first reported, is that Furthur will treat fans to a public soundcheck on Friday and the members of the group “will be jamming on several stages with some of their friends.”

This news certainly ups the ante on what was already a fun-looking event. Furthur Festival takes place at Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angel Camp, CA on May 28-30. Tickets are available now through the newly designed Furthur Festival website. Other acts scheduled to perform at Furthur Festival include Electric Hot Tuna, Jackie Greene, Galactic, Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams, Mark Karan and Jemimah Puddleduck, The Mother Hips, The Waybacks, Common Rotation with Dan Bern, Carney and Maiden Lane.

  1. Not really sure that just playing full album sets is the way to go for basically the festival, would have been cool if they surprised everyone with this. Seems to take away all of the guessing and fun that comes with seeing a show where anything is game – which was what seemed to be happening during their winter tour. That being said the Axomoxa and Anthem sets have the potential to have some amazing psychedelic-jam moments.

  2. I agree — this takes a lot of fun and surprise out of these shows considering how well people know these albums but also how many fans come to expect unpredictability in setlists. As Jeff said, the psychedelic stuff will be fun, but this sort of limits what they can offer…

  3. What, no “Goes to Heaven” set? And will they perform “What’s Become of the Baby” as part of the Aoxomoxoa set?

  4. Phil & Friends did this already in May of ’08. Four shows (Weir sat in for the first), eight albums; including Aoxomoxoa, Anthem, Workingman’s and American Beauty. Not that it’s not a cool idea. It’ll be nice to compare the two. It is kind of a bummer to announce every song of two shows a month ahead of time though.
