God Street Wednesday: Girl From Ipanema

While we all know God Street Wine guitarist Lo Faber is fluent in a number of musical styles, did you know he’s got some  bossa nova chops in his arsenal? In this clip from 1993 in Telluride, Colorado; Faber shows off his bossa nova skills during a flawless cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s The Girl From Ipanema. Lo starts this one out by himself before Tomo joins in on kit.

GSW covered The Girl From Ipanema multiple times during their touring career and in most versions the whole band joined Lo – who would also sing a variation of the lyrics if the mood was right.

Show of the Week: God Street didn’t make it out to Long Island very often. One of their most memorable trips occurred in March of 1995 when they visited Malibu in Lido Beach. Muleman recently uploaded a magnificently crispy soundboard recording of that Malibu show to the Live Music Archive.

  1. This version was during a power problem at the Fly me to the Moon in Telluride, CO…the PA went down and there was just enough power in the house for the guitar amps. Later…that power dropped out, and Tomo entertained the crowd with a candle-lit drum solo.

  2. I was there also It was kind of creepy once getting to Tellride because all the lights were out. It was my first time to Telluride and thought the town was a deadbeat one where the people went to bed early! But then went into Fly Me To The Moon and realized there was a power outage!! Phew!!! GSW sometimes did their best in such relaxed situations as this is the case here.
