God Street Wednesdays: Earliest Videos

We’ve been loving the flood of “new” old God Street Wine audio and video that has found its way into circulation over the past few months. With Winos gearing up for the band’s return to the stage in July, many old fans have converted their cassettes, VHS tapes, DATs and other assorted media to the digital realm where we are all able to enjoy them.

While most of this material comes from the mid ’90s, there’s been a nice chunk of audio and video from 1990 that has turned up this week. In terms of audio, original GSW taper Paul Ducharme’s tapes of 8/16/90 and 9/7/90 have been converted and uploaded to the Live Music Archive by Eric Budke. For video, GSW fan Peter Smith has uploaded 16 entire songs that the group played at the 712 Club in Harlem on August 11, 1990 to YouTube. This appears to be the earliest footage of the band.

Now, the quality of this footage isn’t perfect as it’s quite dark in the club, but the music kicks ass. The show features many tunes that didn’t make it into GSW’s repertoire during their heyday such as Medicine Man, God Street and Edgar as well as a few choice covers including If 6 Was 9 by Hendrix and Rick James’ Superfreak. We’ve put together a playlist featuring all of the videos, so be sure to check it out for a taste of early GSW…
