Grateful Dead Road Trips: Vol. 3, No. 3

You’ve gotta love the frequency of Grateful Dead archival releases. Four months after the last Road Trips installment came out, we’ve got word that Vol. 3 No. 3 – featuring most of the Dead’s early and late shows at the Fillmore East on May 15, 1970 – is available now.

Spring ’70 was a period of transformation and rebirth for the band as they conquered Americana with the same passion that they slayed psychedelia in the late ’60s. Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 3 features a number of songs that would soon be released on the now-legendary Workingman’s Dead LP less than a month later including Casey Jones, New Speedway Boogie, Uncle John’s Band and Black Peter. This collection also marks the first time The Ballad of Casey Jones, Long Black Limousine, She’s Mine (sung by Pigpen) and A Voice From on High (with John “Marmaduke” Dawson and David Nelson from the New Riders) have made an official GD release. We also love the mix of both acoustic and electric material throughout the 3-CD set.

You can pick up Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 3 for $23.98 at the Dead.Net store and you’ll also receive a bonus disc featuring additional selections from the Fillmore East show and a memorable sequence from the previous night’s gig at Meramec College in Kirkwood, Missouri. Our only complaints are the lack of the New Riders sets and the presentation – why not just release the entire shows in sequence? But after surviving through a few years with no archival releases, we’re just jazzed to keep getting these gems from the vault.
