Grateful Dead To Issue Previously Unreleased Show on Vinyl – Record Store Day Black Friday Offerings Also Include

Record Store Day has been expanded to the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday, for the third year in a row. Once again the event’s organizers have enlisted many of our favorite acts to participate and the extensive list of exclusive offerings looks great. Of particular note for our readers is an exciting release from the Grateful Dead. Dubbed “Live at Winterland,” Rhino will put out the previously unreleased May 30, 1971 Dead show mastered from the original two-track reels on 180g vinyl. Only 7,500 copies will be available of the double-LP which features liner notes from noted Dead scholar Blair Jackson.

The gig took place just one day after the famed “Acid Punch Show” in which 39 attendees were hospitalized for treatment of “bad trips” stemming from LSD-spiked apple juice that was given out at the venue. For just $2 those hitting the show on the 30th were able to see openers New Riders of The Purple Sage, R.J. Fox and James and The Good Bros. as well as two fairly mellow sets from the Grateful Dead. For many years only an audience tape of the festivities circulated until 2008 when Charlie Miller shared a soundboard recording that contained most of the second set. Highlights include an outrageous 17-minute Turn On Your Lovelight, a rare take on The Rub and an outstanding Morning Dew.

That’s not the only Black Friday release you’ll want to get. There’s a 7″ picture disc featuring David Bowie’s Jean Genie complete with a version of the tune from BBC’s Top Of The Pops, My Morning Jacket’s performance of It Makes No Difference by The Band with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard from this year’s Newport Folk Festival on 10″ vinyl, the 20th anniversary edition of Nirvana’s b-side compilation Incesticide containing Kurt Cobain’s lyric sheet art and Wood - a DVD from Widespread Panic in a deluxe package that incorporates nine live tracks, band interviews and more from the band’s all-acoustic Wood Tour.

Don’t sleep on the first vinyl release from the recently unveiled Frank Zappa remasters – a 7″ of Why Don’cha Do Me Right and Big Leg Emma from the 1989 Absolutely Free CD reissue. Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a 12″ dubbed “Jazz” from Tenacious D that features a 11:43 song which promises to make us “Forget everything you ever thought you knew about Tenacious D.” We can’t wait to hear what that’s all about.

Head over to the Record Store Day site for the full list of Black Friday releases as well as a searchable database of participating record stores across the country. Support your local indie record store!
