For the past 20 years, pioneering mandolin player David “Dawg” Grisman has put out dozens of fantastic releases featuring “handmade” acoustic music from a variety of artists and genres on his Acoustic Disc indie label. To help celebrate the imprint’s 20th anniversary – and to acknowledge that most music fans are more interested in digital downloads than physical CDs these days – Dawg has launched the Acoustic Oasis portal featuring new and previously unreleased recordings available for download.
When you visit the Acoustic Oasis, you’ll see a floor plan showing 10 different rooms such as the “Studio,” “Guest Room” and “Studio Vault.” Each of the site’s rooms serves a different purpose. For instance, the “Kitchen” gives a preview of “what’s cookin'” – i.e. what Acoustic Disc releases will be available on the site over the next two weeks. The “Living Room” offers a faux TV and Radio where you can stream material from Dawg’s library. If you look around each of the rooms you’re bound to come across a free download from the Acoustic Disc catalog which changes every day.
And it’s not only audio that you can find at Acoustic Oasis. The site’s “Screening Room” includes a couple of clips from Grisman’s Classic Dawg DVD while “The Study” contains a couple of transcriptions mando players will flip over. Yet, the “Studio Vault” is where you’ll find the extended versions of classic Acoustic Disc releases including the 170-minute Extra Large Pizza Tapes with Jerry Garcia. From the looks of the site, it appears there’s more to come and we’re hoping they add much more live material to the “Live Vault.”
