Grizzly Bear are set to release Shields: Expanded / Shields: B-Sides on November 12th. The album features outtakes, demos, and remixes from the band’s excellent 2012 LP, Shields. As a tease, they’ve shared a bonus track called “Listen and Wait,” which is a typical slice of the band’s lush, layered art-rock.
Opening with a quiet calm, the track finds Daniel Rossen twisting out a soothing yet strange piano progression; eventually, though, bass and drums push the toward a maximalist crescendo, as Ed Droste swirls beneath with breathtaking harmonies. So, all in all, it’s nothing too surprising — but also pretty damn great.
Listen for yourself below. What do you think?
This also got me thinking about great b-sides. Here’s my all-time favorite, Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Break This Rhythm.” What’s yours?
