HT Blips: Two Under The Radar Bands

Brett Ratliff

Website / MySpace

Not to be confused with the New York Jets’ reserve QB who tossed a 71-yard TD pass in his first ever NFL play (albeit preseason), Brett Ratliff is a Kentucky born and bred banjo picker with a penchant for thought-provoking instrumentals and rootsy numbers about his home. Ratliff possesses a killer resume: he was raised by a coal miner, sung in the Kentucky churches from age six, loves his Appalachians, plays a banjo that looks homemade, calls himself Cornbrett and listens to Hank Williams and John Hartford. Fresh off his June album release of the excellent Cold Icy Mountain, Ratliff is poised to develop into an Appalachian old-timey icon for the next generation. Now he just needs to sit back and wait for the Coen Brothers to get their hands on it.
