Last Week’s Sauce: April 26th – May 2nd
Last Week’s Sauce is a recurring column featuring recordings of shows that took place the previous week. Thanks to jimna for this week’s photo.

Artist & Title: …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – Isis Unveiled
Date & Venue: 2009-04-23 – Debaser, Malmö, Sweden
Taper & Show Download: Taper Unknown
I’ll let you in on my short-term goal with this weekly piece: I’m trying to go as long as I can, while still keeping it interesting, without repeating a band. This marks the seventh installment of Last Week’s Sauce and we’ve now featured 39 different acts. So that’s why I’m always excited to see bands show up on the LMA that you wouldn’t normally expect to see there, like this one. This track comes off the 2009 release The Century of Self. No current US tour dates, but our International readers have an opportunity to see this outfit live.

Artist & Title: Gary Backstrom Band – Fine Line
Date & Venue: 2009-05-02 – The Attic, Newton MA
Taper & Show Download: corey the groundhog
Jiggle front-man/guitarist Gary Backstrom is still out there playing live music with regularity in a new lineup of musicians. This selection is from the Jiggle catalog, but the new band does quite well with it too. If you live in Massachusetts you’ve got plenty of chances to see Gary live, including Strangecreek Campout.

Artist & Title: The Gourds – Bridget
Date & Venue: 2009-04-29 – The Ark, Ann Arbor MI
Taper & Show Download: Z-Man
If you downloaded music around the turn of the century via Napster or any other number of services out there, you probably grabbed Phish’s version of Gin & Juice. Maybe you knew right away that it wasn’t Phish, maybe your heady roommate was the one that had to tell you that it wasn’t Phish – we’re not making judgments here – but admit it: you downloaded it.
Turns out that was actually a track by this band from Texas called The Gourds that has a whole other career outside of their cover of the Snoop Dogg track. This band has been around for 15 years and released an album last year titled Haymaker!, and this is a track from it. You know, I’d like to meet the person that originally mislabeled that Gin & Juice MP3 and either buy him a beer or punch him in the face.

Artist & Title: Jackie Greene – Like a Ball and Chain
Date & Venue: 2009-04-30 – Aladdin Theatre, Portland OR
Taper & Show Download: Carl Shoemaker
Just yesterday we ran a review of this show, so this track is especially timely. Like a Ball and Chain is one of the more uptempo tunes on Greene’s stellar 2008 release Giving Up the Ghost. I mean, I’m talking one of the best albums of ’08 and I don’t think it got the recognition it deserved. Jackie’s got a slew of upcoming dates including headlining gigs, festivals and a pair of shows opening for Ratdog.

Artist & Title: Soulive – For Granted
Date & Venue: 2009-05-02 – Antone’s, Austin TX
Taper & Show Download: Mike Taylor
Soulive released a self-produced album just last month titled Up Here. This track, an apparent nod to legendary guitar player Grant Green, is on the album and a number of other cuts from the new disc get the live treatment at this show. The current touring lineup of Soulive, which features a horn section, is on a swing of the western part of the country and plays tonight in Boulder.
