Last Week’s Sauce: February 15th – 21st
While this weekly feature is normally a good way to recap what touring bands were up to by way of choosing audio and video to embed for our readers, this week we’re also going to give you a recap of last week’s shenanigans involving the Disco Biscuits and this publication, Hidden Track.

At around 2PM last Thursday afternoon, Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein simply tweeted the URL www.planetanthem.com. With no real fanfare, tDB had launched a fun, and somewhat hilarious, pre-order site for their first studio release in eight years, Planet Anthem. While some of the items available for purchase were pretty standard (i.e. signed CD’s, a copy of the CD plus entry to the record release shows at the TLA in Philly), some were much more interesting (i.e. for $500 you and four friends get to sing the “Oooooooo” part of tDB epic Basis For A Day at Camp Bisco or $250 to get the Disco Biscuits to remix a song for you).
At 2:40pm EST, I sent ScottyB an email to ask a) if he had seen the Pre-Order page and b) if this situation was ripe for satire. With a little help from tDB guru Matt Quinn we went live with a B List at 5pm titled 10 Rejected Planet Anthem Pre-Order Items.
The post was well received with a few of our readers joining in on the comment section to offer up their own entries of funny would-be pre-order items. I also got a couple of emails from friends saying they enjoyed the piece and we were all happy with the way it went. Fast forward to 8:06am the following morning when I got a text message informing me that a number of the jokes listed in our B List had magically appeared on the actual pre-order page! While some of the Hidden-Track inspired items have been purchased, fans still haven’t been able to pool together the $1 million to get tDB to make their triumphant return to the Pacific Northwest.

It was a fun interaction between the HT staff and the boys from the Disco Biscuits. We wish them much success with the release of Planet Anthem, and we apologize in advance for the havoc Brownie is going to wreak when he takes over someone’s Facebook Profile for 24 hours. Can you imagine what he’s going to say to your mother?
Now that we’ve recapped that fiasco, we will move on to our regularly scheduled Last Week’s Sauce feature, leading off with…
Artist & Title: the Disco Biscuits – Feel Good Inc.
Date & Venue: 2010-02-20 Calvin Theater, Northampton MA
Taper & Show Download: Matt Quinn
…the Disco Biscuits! They weren’t just monkeying around on the Internet last week, they were playing shows too. Playing shows and debuting new covers. In addition to this Gorillaz tune you will hear below, the band also had another first-time-played the night before at Lupo’s in Providence where they busted out Gary Numan’s Cars. tDB are off the road for a few weeks and will next hit a live stage for a pair of record-release shows at the TLA in Philly on March 15th and 16th.

Rivers from the following night:
Artist & Title: George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic – Maggot Brain
Date & Venue: 2010-02-20 Keswick Theater, Glenside PA
Taper & Show Download: edtyre
Moving on from our favorite weed-smokers to our favorite crack-smoker, we’ve got George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. Clinton and the gang are off tonight but have a performance tomorrow at Sayreville, New Jersey’s classic venue – the Starland Ballroom. I’m sure they won’t find any ways to get into any trouble around there.

Some video from the same show:
Artist & Title: Medeski Martin & Wood – Zagzagel
Date & Venue: 2010-02-20 Rio Theater, Santa Cruz CA
Taper & Show Download: Mike Vescovo
Obviously, I don’t have time to listen to every show or every track when I’m putting this piece together, so I often rely on comments from those in attendance or sometimes the tapers themselves. The same bt.etree.org user that uploaded this show also has the first comment on the torrent and it reads, “Really fucking good Zagzagel on this show. Medeski pretty much goes ape shit on his arsenal of keyboards for a significant chunk of the tune. All in all a very quiet crowd as well, which translated into a very nice recording.” Sounds good to me! And he’s right, John does indeed go ape shit on this John Zorn tune found on the MMW release Zaebos: The Book Of Angels Volume 11. MMW plays tonight at the Crystal Bay Crown Club Room in Crystal Bay NV.

Some video from two nights before:
Artist & Title: Trey Anastasio & Classic TAB – Black Dog
Date & Venue: 2010-02-19 The Riviera Theater, Chicago IL
Taper & Show Download: taperjoe
Sometime last week before the New York City show, Trey remembered he had another lead singer in the band in Jennifer Hartswick. Since busting out Black Dog, JHa has been stealing the show left and right with this Led Zeppelin Cover. Hopefully Dazed & Confused makes another appearance before the tour is out. Trey plays tomorrow at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

A bunch of the Joy songs also got their first solo acoustic treatment last week:
Artist & Title: Wilco – Broken Arrow
Date & Venue: 2010-02-20 Overture Center, Madison WI
Taper & Show Download: Jon Hull
Wilco has added a new cover to their repertoire, Buffalo Springfield’s Broken Arrow. And they perform it complete with the ten seconds of Mr. Soul that you hear on the original studio rendition. It’s very well done. Wilco plays tonight in London CA.
