Last Week’s Sauce: February 8th – 14th

Artist & Title: Tortoise – High Class Slim Came Floatin’ In
Date & Venue: 2010-02-11 Headliner’s Music Hall, Louisville KY
Taper & Show Download: Brent Stober

Gotta love a new Tortoise SBD. This tune is the opening track from the 2009 release Beacons Of Ancestorship. Tortoise is in the middle of a very brief run of dates, they will play tonight at Mr. Small’s in Pittsburgh, then off to Toronto, Ann Arbor, and a tour closer in Chicago.

Video from the next night at the Exit/Inn:

Artist & Title: Trey Anastasio – Love Is Freedom > Simple Twist Up Dave
Date & Venue: 2010-02-13 Oakdale Theater, Wallingford CT
Taper & Show Download: Jesse Hurlburt

You know the band has pulled off something impressive when the scene in the hotel room post-show involves all your Phish geek friends talking abut the outro to Love Is Freedom. Today is a travel day for Trey and Classic TAB as the band has wrapped up the Northeast portion of their 16-day tour and is headed for the Midwest, they play tomorrow night at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee.

“Valentine” from the night before in Boston:

Artist & Title: Umphrey’s McGee – I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
Date & Venue: 2010-02-14 Ram’s Head Live, Baltimore MD
Taper & Show Download: Timothy Brown

As we previously reported, fans had the responsibility of deciding what new cover Umphrey’s McGee would perform in honor of Valentine’s Day. I voted for Wilco, lots of people voted for Wilco, and we won. And it sounds great! The next question is whether the band decides to keep it around. UM is off the road this week, the band plays seven shows in the Northeast at the end of February and beginning of March, and is having another S2 event, this time the lucky venue is Philadelphia’s Electric Factory.

UM running through #5 in Nashville a few days earlier:

Artist & Title: Wilco – California Stars
Date & Venue: 2010-02-10 Paramount Theater, Seattle WA
Taper & Show Download: Eytan Bernet

Bill Frisell (guitar) and Scott McCaughey (keyboard) joined Wilco for a beautiful rendition of California Stars in Seattle last week. The only complaint there is to say about this match-made-in-heaven, is that Frisell should have played on at least one more tune. Wilco plays tonight in Sakatoon CA, but likely more interesting to our readers is that Saturday’s show from Madison’s Overture Hall will have a live webcast on wilcoworld.net.
