Last Week’s Sauce: January 4th – 10th

Artist & Title: Marco Benevento Trio – Two Of You
Date & Venue: 2010-01-07 Sculler’s, Cambridge MA
Taper & Show Download: Jason Adler

I always like it when a show I went to make its onto Last Week’s Sauce, it makes it so much easier to write about. Marco Benevento came to town with Reed Mathis on bass and Andrew Barr on Drums and they played one of the jazz clubs rather than the rock rooms that the Benevento/Russo Duo would normally play. It was a great night of music that may or may not have been influenced by the dental work Marco had done in the morning (listen after the track to hear an explanation of this from Marco).

This track was the third song of the night and Marco let the audience in on his plans to have this song be the opening tune on his next album. In a move that was about as surprising as Mark McGwire admitting to his steroid use, Andrew’s brother Brad Barr joined the ensemble for the last two tunes of the set. Unfortunately for you, this group’s tour dates have passed. Benevento next plays with moe. at the Roseland Ballroom on January 22nd before he heads to Japan playing with Garage A Trois.

Artist & Title: Perpetual Groove – Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes
Date & Venue: 2010-01-08 WorkPlay Theatre, Birmingham AL
Taper & Show Download: Dennis Tyler

Sure PGroove has played this Paul Simon cover before, but I’m inclined to think that its inclusion in this show was directly influenced by ScottyB. Perpetual Groove plays Friday night in Columbia SC.

Artist & Title: Project/Object – City Of Tiny Lites
Date & Venue: 2010-01-06 River Street Jazz Cafe, Plains PA
Taper & Show Download: Keith Litzenberger

Ike Willis & Ray White, two legends in the Zappa community, were on tour with Project/Object for a quick run of shows but as of now have no more tour dates on the books. This is a great recording, so if you missed the tour like I did – check it out. Also, The Hue’s Jared Rabin wrote about his experience with Project/Object for Hidden Track’s Tour Diary series.

Artist & Title: The Ragbirds – Book Of Matches
Date & Venue: 2010-01-09 Majestic Cafe, Detroit MI

Fun fact about The Ragbirds – their touring vehicle runs on Waste Vegetable Oil. What their website describes as, “the kind of oil your last order of french fries was cooked in”. The Ragbirds play Friday night in Ann Arbor MI.

  1. hahaha. Someone not use to writing “2010” yet? Seems all these “Last Week” shows were from 2001. hahaha.

  2. HA! Thanks MarleyPhish for catching that. For what it’s worth, I do Copy & Paste the first entry and then just change the details, so I didn’t write it five times, just wrote it the once and copied it down.

Nice catch! And yes, I am not use to writing 2010.
