Last Week’s Sauce: July 5th – 11th

Artist & Title: Club D’Elf – Caveman
Date & Venue: 2010-07-08 Lizard Lounge – Cambridge, MA
Taper & Show Download: Andy Murray

Club D’Elf is a rotating cast of musicians where the only constant is bassist Mike Rivard. The repertoire mainly consists of instrumentals written by Rivard, but they also have some pretty deep cuts. For example this song Caveman was written by slide trumpeter Steve Bernstein known for his work in Sex Mob and The Lounge Lizards. Dave Tronzo, a guitar player in the D’Elf family that played last Thursday, has recorded Caveman a few times with Bernstein in an ensemble called Spanish Fly. One of the characteristics that makes D’Elf such an interesting group is how these arrangements vary from show to show, check out the difference in tempo from this performance of Caveman from 5-25-2006 [thanks to sgordo for the comparison]. D’Elf plays a rare show inside the state of New York tonight at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, 12:30AM start time for D’Elf, they are the last of five acts.

Though I have no video of last Thursday’s performance, here is a completely different lineup from May of this year at The Lizard Lounge:

God Street Wine – When She Go > Molly, Goodnight Gretchen
Date & Venue: 2010-07-10 Grammercy Theater – New York, NY
Taper & Show Download: Taper Scott Bernstein

I mean what can I really say that Writer Scott Bernstein didn’t say on Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday? Nothing, I got nothing to say. I even called ScottyB to have him tell me what show, tape and songs to use. In case you never read Hidden Track, GSW plays Friday and Saturday at NYC’s Irving Plaza.
