Taper & Show Download: bporter

Dr. Dog is one of those bands that gets covered by almost all of the online music publications, it is impressive what wide appeal they have. Both of these tracks come from the bands newest release, Shame Shame. Dr. Dog plays tonight to a sold out Paradise in Boston.

Heart it Races from the same show in Louisville:

A&T: Iron & Wine – Boy With A Coin, Flightless Bird American Mouth
Date & Venue: 2010-05-04 Paramount Theater – Charlottesville, VA
Taper & Show Download: Craig Davis

These stage names sure can be confusing. Samuel Beam aka Iron & Wine tours both with a band and sometimes solo. But then again, he also goes by the name of Iron & Wine. Anyway, this is a solo show, and man… look at the video below to see just how small a solo act with one light can look on a big stage. One gig on the books right now for Iron & Wine: September 11th at the End Of The Road Festival in the UK.

Boy With A Coin Video:

Artist & Title: Kung Fu – Jam with Wyllys, Red Baron
Date & Venue: 2010-05-06 Mexicali – Teaneck, NJ

It was quite an exciting night in Teaneck New Jersey. In addition to Kung Fu, the jam scene’s hottest new fusion act, being on the bill – they were also joined by: HT Contributor Wyllys with special guest Rob Marscher, friends of HT Newton Crosby and Jennifer Hartswick was also in the house. The selected audio embedded is first Wyllys & Rob who are joined by the members of Kung Fu. The second track is from later in the set and it features Kung Fu performing a cover of Red Baron with JHa on trumpet. Kung Fu next plays with The Breakfast May 27th at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT.

Artist & Title: Local Natives – Shape Shifter, Warning Sign
Date & Venue: 2010-05-07 Bowery Ballroom – New York, NY
Taper & Show Download: nyctaper

I normally just scan bt.etree.org and the Live Music Archive for tracks for this weekly feature, but after double-checking with the guy that runs nyctaper, I’m happy to say I’m going to start pulling some tracks from that site as well. If you like this column, you’ll love nyctaper. Not only does he supply free live recordings of rarely taped bands, but there’s always a short review attached as well. Check out this bit of info…

We saw the band on Friday, where in the middle of their set they performed the Talking Heads cover that appears on their album (”Warning Sign”) while David Byrne himself peered down approvingly from the Bowery balcony.

This cover and a tune from the bands Gorilla Manor release are included in the embedded audio. Local Natives play tonight in Columbus, OH.

  1. Stellar work as always! I caught Local Natives the night before that recording at the Bowery and Warning Sign was definitely one of the highlights of the show. I read that David Byrne showed up the night that this was recorded. Seeing Dr. Dog this weekend with Deer Tick, can’t wait!!!
