Last Week's Sauce

Artist & Title: Gene Ween – Birthday Boy, Baby Bitch
Date & Venue: 2009-05-09 – The Walnut Room, Denver CO
Taper & Show Download: Eric Foelske

Last week, I let you in on my goal of using unique artists for as long as I can with this piece. Well, I’m already stretching things a little bit, but I think it’s OK. I have previously used the Gene Ween Band, but this is Gener solo – TOTALLY different. Anyway, I really like this 1-2 combo of songs as they are both well constructed tunes and have similar subject matter. There is a line in Baby Bitch, “Wrote Birthday Boy for you babe”. He’s got two more solo gigs on the books in June.

Artist & Title: The Heavy Pets – Train Song
Date & Venue: 2009-05-03 – River Street Jazz Cafe, Plains PA
Taper & Show Download: Keith Litzenberger

When my friend Steve called me up to tell me I needed to go see the Heavy Pets at Harper’s Ferry, I did the easiest thing to check out some audio and went to their MySpace page. The tune that jumped out at me was Train Song (no, not the Phish song). Great tune. The Pets start a swing through their native Florida tomorrow.

Artist & Title: Max Creek – Blood Red Roses
Date & Venue: 2009-05-09 – The Warehouse, Hartford CT
Taper & Show Download: Mike Nichols

This show marked Max Creek’s 38th anniversary. Thirty-eight years, that’s fucking nuts. When we were young lover’s of music, my good friend Dan was the one that told me to check out Blood Red Roses before we went to Camp Creek one summer – it’s a killer song. These guys will play next at Strangecreek on May 23rd.

Artist & Title: McLovins – You Enjoy Myself
Date & Venue: 2009-05-02 – The Mains Pub, Manchester CT
Taper & Show Download: ziko

Our interest in McLovins is not a secret around here – we think these guys are awesome. Here’s some straight audio of the Phish cover that put these guys on the map (watch out for some Hendrix teases). McLovins are popping up all over Connecticut, check ‘em out. Yes, I know this show is actually from one day before the date range for “Last Week”.
