Artist & Title: Assembly Of Dust – Brown Sugar
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Tupelo Music Hall, Salisbury MA
Taper & Show Download: SmokinJoe

“You should have heard him just around midnight”. A few covers, an acoustic section and a fan requested bustout of Strangefolk’s Far From Yourself round out this New Year’s show from Reid Genauer and Assembly of Dust. Reid hits the road again solo for a few shows to start 2010. Catching him solo is highly recommended, I’ve said it before, Reid is one of the best screamers of our generation.

Artist & Title: the Disco Biscuits – Strobelights & Martinis > Countdown
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Nokia Theater, New York NY
Taper & Show Download: Matt Quinn

the Disco Biscuits put more time and preparation into the minutes just before Midnight than any other band on the planet and this year they outdid themselves. After jamming on their instrumental Strobelights & Martinis, the band played a medley of all their big guns in a descending countdown. And they were:

10) Orch Theme 9) Morph Dusseldorf 8) Run Like Hell 7) Aceetobee 6) Vassillios 5) Mr. Don 4) Above the Waves 3) Munchkin Invasion 2) Crickets 1) Basis For A Day.

It’s ridiculous. See also the House Dog Countdown from ’99, Save The Robots Countdown from ’04, and the Bazaar Escape Countdown from ’06. the Disco Biscuits play four shows at Boulder’s Fox Theater starting January 28th.

Artist & Title: Furthur – St. Stephen > The Eleven
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco CA
Taper & Show Download: Taper Unknown

We took a look at Furthur’s cover of Pink Floyd’s Time yesterday, so I decided to go with this classic song combination for our audio selection today. Furthur starts a month-long tour on February 5th in Miami.

Artist & Title: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals – Top Gun Anthem > Danger Zone > Top Gun Anthem > Auld Lang Syne
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Higher Ground, Burlington VT
Taper & Show Download: jjohnso2

Grace Potter & The Nocturnal’s second set was all about the Top Gun Soundtrack. This is just a portion, there is way more – give the entire set a listen, it’s awesome. The band next plays at Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble in Woodstock NY on January 9th.

Artist & Title: Phish – Boogie On Reggae Woman – Run Like An Antelope
Date & Venue: 2009-12-30 American Airlines Arena, Miami FL
Taper & Show Download: taylorc

When I said in the intro that most of our audio would be from 12-31 shows, Phish was the exception. For whatever reason with this band, the 31st is rarely the night of the run, and it certainly wasn’t this year. When I spoke with ScottyB on the phone the afternoon of the 31st he couldn’t wait to tell me about how this segment went down. If you haven’t heard it yet, give it a listen. If you’ve only listened to the SBD, listen again on this tape and hear the crowd yelp at every Boogie On Reggae Woman tease that appears in this Antelope. No tour dates for Phish but we’ll be seeing them this summer. Trey Anastasio announced plans for his winter tour yesterday.

Artist & Title: Widespread Panic – Protein Drink/Sewing Machine
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Phillips Arena, Atlanta GA
Taper & Show Download: Z-Man

Ryan did a great job of recapping the Widespread Panic NYE gig this morning on HT. This tune that closed out the entire run was one of many musical tributes to Vic Chesnutt, a dear friend and collaborator of the band that recently passed away. As of now, only one date on the books for Widespread Panic, but it’s a good one: April 29th at the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

More Vic Chesnutt tunes from 12-30, this one is called Aunt Avis:

Happy New Year.
