Artist & Title: Furthur – Viola Lee Blues > Cumberland Blues > Viola Lee
Date & Venue: 2009-09-20 Fox Theater, Oakland CA
Taper & Show Download: Unknown

The much anticipated Furthur shows took place last week and the tapes are out there for everyone to listen to. Furthur has no future shows scheduled, but everyone wants to know if they will play again. This section is pretty sweet, I haven’t listened to much – but the band definitely sounds like it has got some serious potential. Most common feedback I’ve heard is that everyone was hoping “Fake Jerry” had gotten more time singing lead.

READ ON to hear tracks from the likes of MMW and Stephen Kellogg…

Artist & Title: Medeski Martin & Wood – Gwyra Mi
Date & Venue: 2009-09-17 WorkPlay Theater, Birmingham AL
Taper & Show Download: Dennis Tyler

These guys had a bad gig in Birmingham. The crowd was especially chatty, nobody was listening and thus the band did not perform an encore. Thankfully this is an onstage tape (no chatter) and this selection off Radiolarians III sounds great. MMW is off the road for the rest of the month but will retake the live stage on October 2nd at Austin City Limits. Check out their Twitter feed from the days in question:

Artist & Title: Spin Doctors – How Could You Want Him (When You Know You Could Have Me?)
Date & Venue: 2009-09-18 Last Blast of Summer, Syracuse NY
Taper & Show Download: Steven Weld

Instead of going with any of the “hits”, I selected this tune from Pocket Full Of Kryptonite because I always thought it had a lot going on. Looks like this was a one-off gig, as I cannot find any information on any upcoming Spin Doctors dates.

Artist & Title: Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers – See Yourself > Dying Wish Of A Teenager
Date & Venue: 2009-09-15 The Blind Pig, Ann Arbor MI
Taper & Show Download: Z-Man

These guys have a new record out this month titled The Bear and it’s quite good. This two song combo are both tracks from that album. Kellogg & The Sixers have an in-store acoustic performance today in Boulder and play the Ogden Theater in Denver tomorrow.

Artist & Title: U-Melt – King Of Pain > Wrapped Around Your Finger
Date & Venue: 2009-09-19 Wormtown Festival, Greenfield MA
Taper & Show Download: Rob Clarke

Since this piece is a recap of what happened the previous week, I’ve got no problems providing double coverage of things like surprise covers of entire albums by The Police. U-Melt plays tonight at the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton.
