Live Downloads: Umphrey’s at the Nokia
Umphrey’s McGee was one of the first bands to sell official recordings of nearly every show they played when they introduced the UmLive program in 2003.
At first the Chicago-based sextet only sold discs at their merch table, but soon thereafter they started peddling downloads of most shows through disclogic.com. Disclogic went bust in 2006, so Umphrey’s partnered with LiveDownloads.com to sell their official recordings through a new website called Umlive.net. That history lesson-cum-introduction leads us to Umphrey’s McGee’s terrific show at the Nokia Theater from October 20th, which is our Live Downloads show of the week.

During recent tours Umphrey’s has perfected the time-tested formula of sprinkling special guests, random covers and heady improvisations throughout two sets of well-written songs. The first set of Umphrey’s Saturday night show at the Nokia Theater in New York City featured the boys nailing some of their hardest compositions while also dropping two inventive song sequences that had never been played before. Andy’s Last Beer started with an intense buildup and ended with the band giving the young crowd a lesson on odd time signatures.
Bridgeless followed and quickly segued into a danceable jam that slyly slithered towards a rare cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Power To Love. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss’s voice sounded great throughout the evening, and he absolutely nailed Power to Love. Of course covering Hendrix is all about guitar tone, and UM’s other guitar player Jake Cinninger put on quite a clinic during his solo. Keyboardist Joel Cummins took control shortly after Cinninger’s solo and deftly led the band back through the end of Bridgeless. Read on after the jump for much more…
Umphrey’s slowed things down by playing Morning Song in honor of their friend Heidi’s birthday before dropping another clever sandwich featuring the anthemic Glory smack dab in the middle of Uncommon. Uncommon, one of my favorite UM tunes, combines deep lyrical content with a spastic chord structure that is uniquely Umphrey’s. Next up was Wizard Burial Ground, a new instrumental tune that is heavy on guitar theatrics and stop-on-a-dime proggy changes.

My favorite jam of the night occurred in the middle of Mulche’s Odyssey when the band veered off on an extremely heavy tangent in the middle of the song. This “Jimmy Stewart” structured jam almost sounded like it could have been lifted from a ’80s horror movie. Cinninger lays down some beautifully melodic runs before leading the band back into the end of Mulche’s. It’s crazy how these guys have gotten tighter while playing less shows this year. Maybe less *is* more.
Towards the middle of the second set Umphrey’s invited two all-stars up to the stage for two completely different sit-ins. First up was Scott Metzger, who stole the show with his blistering solo during a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. Metzger displayed the perfect mix of rapid-fire licks with soulful emotion that makes me wonder why he wasn’t on the cover of Rolling Stone’s recent guitar gods issue.
After Metzger left the stage, Umphrey’s treated the crowd to the lyrically intense Roulette. Hasidic Homeboy Matisyahu joined the band towards the end of the song for an unexpected cover of his Close Your Eyes that made the crowd go crazy. Matis’s sit-in was fun, if utterly unimpressive musically. I’ve never been a big fan of his shtick.

It’s always special when band’s change things up and bring out special guests, but after Matis left the stage I was ready for some straight up Umph’s. The band was glad to oblige, playing a string of five wonderful originals that showed off completely different aspects of their sound. Hajimemashite featured Brendan Bayliss nailing high notes both vocally and with his guitar during an intense duel with Jake Cinninger. The Triple Wide followed getting everyone in the close to capacity crowd on their feet thanks its slick beat. While most songs were ten minutes or more Umphrey’s also showed that they know how to play an energetic three-minute pop song by dropping Got Your Milk Right Here.
Umphrey’s had one more impressive improvisation left in them as they came out for the encore. Al and Rob from moe. looked on from the side of the stage as Umphrey’s emptied the tank during a tight 12-minute version of Ocean Billy. Kris Myers propelled the last jam of the night to dizzying heights sending the crowd out onto the streets of New York City exhausted but happy.

btw – caught UM two nights before in binghamton, ny and despite recently turning into some jamband diva (thinking I can critique bands for whatever reason), I was floored by what I heard that night. Very, Very impressed. I betcha this show is no exception either.
If you hate on UM nowadays, youz better be able to defend why.

Great review, Scotty…that summed up a helluva night of music perfectly. I’d have much rather seen Al and Rob sit in than Matisyahu, but then that wouldn’t have led the kid next to me at the time to freak the fuck out when Matis came on. First he went nuts, then he asked me, “Who is that on stage?” When I said “Matisyahu,” he freaked out once more and then said “He’s on my label…he’s on my record label” and bounced away, never to be seen again. Those kinds of strange interactions are what live music is all about.
Also, I second the kudos bar on Metzger sit-in…that was some quality, quality stuff right there.
Nice UM review. I love these guys alot. Sometimes I get tired of their poppy vocals, but then they start playing some intense, crazy jam, and I love them all over again.
I would suggest the Austin, TX show to everybody. It was from 10/6/07 I believe. I was there and it blew my mind.
Fantastic write up. I really enjoyed the show that night, the band was definitely firing on all cylinders. Now if they could only have songs that were a bit more melodic.
