Luther Dickinson Joins The Black Crowes
If Tea Leaf Green replacing Ben Chambers with Reed Mathis was a steal, then the Black Crowes replacing Paul Stacey with Luther Dickinson will go down as the best deal this side of the Louisiana Purchase. The Crowes announced the move on Tuesday as they spilled the beans on details about their new album. Warpaint will be released via the Crowes’ new imprint Silver Arrow Records on March 4th.

Dickinson makes his Crowes recording debut on Warpaint and will join the band on a world tour supporting the album throughout 2008. Before anyone starts scouring Northern Mississippi for another Allstar, keep in mind that Luther will probably keep his role in NMAS. At least that’s what Mike Greenhaus thinks, and we trust him. This won’t be the first time a Robinson brother will be in a band with Luther Dickinson, as Rich played in the short lived Circle Sound with Luther last year. Last summer I was extremely underwhelmed by the Crowes, and more specifically Paul Stacey’s guitar work, during their gig at Central Park’s Summerstage. Stacey could give Larry Campbell a run for the title of world’s most generic guitar tone. The highlight of the night came when Dickinson joined the band for a blazing version of Downtown Money Waster and a blissful Thorn In My Pride. Luther stole the show with his sly slide playing and clearly pushed the Robinson brothers to new heights.
Warpaint was produced and mixed by Paul Stacey in Woodstock, New York, and also features the Crowes’ new keyboard player Adam MacDougall. The Black Crowes plan to add some new excitement to their upcoming shows by playing Warpaint in its entirety before playing some from throughout their career.
We usually wouldn’t be happy to see a legendary band play a whole set of new material, but how many times can you see the Crowes play Remedy? These guys have been touring behind the same material since they came back in March of 2005, so we’re ready for a change. The Crowes head to Australia where they will kickoff the Warpaint tour on March 24th, expect the new unit back in the states by the summer. We’ll be waiting.

no problem. Mike Greenhaus is also a dumbass if he thinks the Crowes tour itinerary is going to remain limited. They have been touring extensively since 2005, do u think they r going to do something different the year they release an album?
never, ever impressed with paul stacey’s guitar work. Ever, and I have a slew of black crowes shows over the years.
Perhaps, even more than Reed hopping on the TLG train, this is jam-dropping goodness for any of us who love Luther Dickinson!
I had taken the Crowes off my ‘must-see’ band list a year or so ago. Even when they came 40 minutes from my house, I decided to stay home and count carpet strands.
No more though. Luther w/ the Black Crowes is a huge announcement. NOT JUST for the jam community, but for Rock-N-Roll.

Dudes, Paul was only there for a bit, just to fill in, do you think he would replace Marc Ford?? Please Marc Ford is the man. And yes Luther will be huge, but if you missed the Crowes with Marc, then you missed the Crowes.

Hey Goff, Paul was only with the band from Septemeber of Last Year. Thats not long with this epic touring band. Ive seen the Crowes too many times to count (since 91). The songs were just not the same with Paul, they made all jams shorter, guitar solos lacked bigtime. But I guess if your trying to stand in Marc Fords shoes, thats no easy thing to do. Luther should be fun. looking forward to it.
I love Luther with the Crowes. He compliments Rich so well….the album is aweome. As long as the Crowes have Rich and Chris, they will always be great. Hands down…….personally, i would like to thank them both for keepin the song alive. So many great songs, and whoever they put on the “lead” unquote, it always sounds so good. A lost art…………….I am a newer crowes fan, i will admit, but my god, what great music. I love the jam band thing, but the crowes bring back something that my generation has been left without……..rock n roll…..i hope the crowes know how important they are to music………thank you Mr Robinsons you have won me over forever. My first experience was Bonnaroo 2005……..it was awesome…..Blown away……so good……take care everyone……see you in the beer line…….GO YANKEES
