Neil Young & Crazy Horse Play Marathon Show in Melbourne Featuring Three Tour Debuts and Cortez The Killer

If you’ve been keeping up with our coverage of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Alchemy World Tour which began in August of 2012 and is currently slated to run through August ’13, you know that Ol’ Neil and his band don’t alter their setlists that much from night to night. That changed in a big way last night when the legendary rocker and his legendary band played the smallest room Young has ever performed at in Australia and treated fans to a scorching performance.

Last night’s show, which took place at the 5,000 seat The Plenary in Melbourne, was taped for a future concert film and extended past the three-hour mark. All in all, Neil Young and Crazy Horse performed 18 songs – three more than at any show so far this tour. Dangerbird, Barstool Blues and Sedan Delivery were each played for the first time on the Alchemy Tour and the show also featured the first version of Cortez The Killer since November.

Here’s last night’s setlist…

Set: Love And Only Love / Powderfinger / Born In Ontario / Walk Like A Giant / Hole In The Sky / Heart Of Gold / Twisted Road / Singer Without A Song / Ramada Inn / Cinnamon Girl / Cortez The Killer / Dangerbird / Barstool Blues / Prisoners Of Rock ‘n’ Roll / Opera Star / Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / Sedan Delivery

Encore: Like A Hurricane

Music critic Paul Cashmere was in attendance last night and raved about it

Tonight, Neil Young fans got to see him up close and personal for one of his most ferocious shows ever, with thanks to his band of pitbulls, Crazy Horse. I challenge any musician even two thirds younger than 67-year old Neil Young to go a few rounds with him on stage. He would destroy you musically.

I’ve seen Neil Young on every one of his Australian tours and by far this was his most powerful. In total, three hours from head to toe. Neil Young & Crazy Horse were like a hurricane this evening. Tonight he was totally switched to 11.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse play the much larger Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Friday.
