After over a year of speculation iconic British metal act Black Sabbath have finally announced a reunion of the classic lineup that featured Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne to release a new studio album and to embark on a World Tour. A press conference to reveal the details was held today in Los Angeles at the famed Whiskey A Go Go, where they made their debut 41 years ago this evening. Henry Rollins hosted the event.
This version of Sabbath last reunited in 1997 to headline Osborne’s Ozzfest and toured every once in a while until 2005. In 2007 all of Sabbath except for Ozzy teamed up with former front man Ronnie James Dio as Heaven and Hell and went on to release a studio album a few years later. In 2012 Black Sabbath will release a studio album produced by Rick Rubin. A title and date are forthcoming, but it will be released on Vertigo/Universal Republic and will be the lineup’s first studio album since 1978.
Next summer, Sabbath will headline the Download Festival in the U.K. on June 10th and will then embark on a worldwide arena tour. As part of today’s announcement, the band has also revealed that BlackSabbath.com will be up and running with news and official content from the band shortly.
